POLICE who attended a Blackburn town centre fight had a laptop computer and a warrant card stolen from their car after leaving it unlocked.

The town’s magistrates heard that minutes later CCTV picked up a man carrying the computer and a woman passing him a garment which he wrapped around the machine before hiding it in bushes.

Karl William Thompson, 36, of St Peter Street, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to handling a stolen laptop belonging to Lancashire Constabulary and Amy Louise Cowburn, 23, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to assisting in the retention of stolen property.

They were both remanded on bail until July 27 for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.

Eddie Harrison, prosecuting, said as soon as police arrived at the scene of a fight they jumped out of their car and gave chase.

“The laptop and warrant card were taken while the officers were away but there is nothing to suggest who took them,” said Mr Harrison. “A short time after CCTV showed Thompson in possession of the laptop.”

Thompson later took police to where the computer had been hidden. The warrant card was recovered but the computer was not there.
