A 37-YEAR-old man who finished with his partner while his mental health was affected by excessive cannabis use had a change of heart when he came to his senses.

But his efforts to rekindle the romance were met with a harassment warning from the police and then resulted in Alastair John Mather being arrested.

Mather, of Slaidburn Drive, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to harassing Susan Grogan. He was fined £205 with £20 costs and made subject to a restraining order which prohibits him from contacting Miss Grogan or approaching her home address or place of work.

Dominic Howells, prosecuting, said Mather had been sending Miss Grogan abusive and threatening text messages which resulted in the police warning. Following that several notes were put through her letter box although they were not abusive.

On November 1 she returned home to find mud had been thrown on her windows.

Damian Pickup, defending, said after ending the relationship Mather started coming to his senses.

"When he tried to re-establish contact he was issued with the harassment warning," said Mr Pickup. "He then started to drop of handwritten letters in which he simply wrote how much he loved her, how sorry he was and asking could they make a go of it."

He said Mather had been at work when he became very emotional and broke down in tears.

"His bosses sent him home and he went to her house to speak to Miss Grogan," said Mr Pickup. "He threw mud at the windows to try and get her attention but he now appreciates it was hardly the most romantic thing to do in the circumstances.

"He has had 24 hours in a police cell to think about things and now realises the relationship is over."
