BLACKBURN MP Jack Straw will further back the town’s £6 million Youth Zone when he becomes its new chairman next year.

The former Home Secretary – who steps down as Blackburn’s Labour MP at next year’s general election – will replace business leader Graham Brown, Graham and Brown’s chief executive officer, next year.

Mr Straw is currently honorary president of the charity, but will take a more hands-on approach from May.

He said: “I’m delighted to become chairman of the Youth Zone. I think it’s one of the most positive developments in the borough for many years, providing fantastic facilities for young people.

“It also brings together white and Asian heritage youngsters. When I announced I would step down as MP, I wanted to continue making a contribution to the borough, and this will be one way of doing so.”

Mr Graham remains as chairman until May, before taking the lead on private sector engagement and fundraising. He will remain on the board.

He said: “I am delighted to confirm Jack has agreed to become chair of the Youth Zone. He has been an incredible supporter of the charity, understanding what an impact this project can deliver on regeneration and youth devel-opment .

“With Jack’s connections, wisdom and incredible passion for helping the people of Blackburn, he will help the Youth Zone continue to flourish and leave a lasting legacy.”

The pair are expected to formally announce the move tomorrow at the Youth Zone.

More than 4,000 youngsters have joined the centre since it opened in June 2012.

A registered charity, it relies on outside funding to help entertain eight to 18-year-olds for just 50p a visit.
