A 22-YEAR-OLD man’s life was turned upside down by news the child he thought was his was actually fathered by another man.

Blackburn magistrates heard there were problems between the two and, when there was a chance meeting, the red mist descended on Jake Darren Smith and he assaulted the other man.

The court was told Smith’s problems had got worse following the publication of details of the court case which resulted in the baby being taken away from his partner.

“He is now faced with the prospect of having to leave his partner so she can get her child back,” said Damian Pickup, defending.

Smith, 22, of Abraham Street, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to assaulting Alan Brown and harassing him and producing cannabis.

He was made subject to community supervision for 18 months and a restr-aining order.

Andrew Robinson, prosecuting, said Mr Brown was the ex-partner of Smith’s new partner.

There were several incidents which event-ually resulted in Smith being given a written harassment warning.

Mr Pickup said Smith had effectively been aban-doned by his parents when he was 13 years old, and added: “He was a lonely man who met a woman and when she had what they believed was their child he was delighted.

“A DNA test later showed the child was not his and that had a devastating effect on him.

“He blamed Mr Brown and when they met the red mist descended.”
