'The Government has lost its bottle on alcohol pricing' says Blackburn MP Jack Straw
4:53pm Thursday 14th March 2013 in Blackburn By Lawrence Dunhill
BLACKBURN MP Jack Straw has accused the Government of “losing its bottle” amid speculation that plans to introduce minimum alcohol prices are set to be dropped.
Prime minister David Cameron has previously thrown his weight behind proposals to introduce a 45p per unit minimum price, but a number of Cabinet ministers have made it clear they harbour doubts.
Mr Straw said: “I think the minimum price would help to cut down on binge drinking and continual boozing.
“The higher the price, the lower the consumption – we know that from smoking. The government has lost its bottle on this.”
However, David Grant, managing director of Moorhouse’s brewery in Burnley, said the plans did not go far enough.
He said: “What they should do is put the price up at a realistic level because what they’re looking at won’t affect anything other than your two-litre ciders and very inexpensive bottles of vodka. Bottles of beer are sold for more than that now anyway.
“If you’re going to legislate you might as well legislate and make a difference. It would bring the supermarket pricing slightly more in line with the pub pricing.”
Speculation has been growing for weeks that the proposals will be shelved, with criticism that it would unfairly punish responsible drinkers on low incomes. This was echoed by Nigel Evans, Conservative MP for Ribble Valley and honorary president of the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group.
He said: “There’s a specific problem which needs a specific solution, and putting the price up to 45p a unit wouldn’t deter binge drinkers.”
Steve Magnall, of Blackburn brewery Thwaites, has previously welcomed the minimum price proposals, saying: “Any move that will begin to align pricing of alcohol between the on and off trade is positive news for pub licensees and consumers, as it will encourage people back into the pubs where they drink in a controlled environment.”

An accepted definition already exists in the form of the breathalyser, which when administered, could give an indication as to the level of prior consumption. This then could be used to define the level of fine imposed.
Set a level that is acceptable for consumption then impose a fine, at say £10 per point over the limit, with an extra £5 per point, if there is any aggressive behaviour evinced.
To my mind, this would seem to be a more appropriate method of control than arbitrary pricing levels.

I personally think alcohol should be banned completely in uk, there would be a dramatic fall in anti social behaviour incidents, domestic violence and a big drop in a&e admissions, if a political party put in their manifesto they would bring in prohibition they would certanliy get my vote. I know that you lot out there are going to slate me for this comment, buit that's ok. I know that i'm talking sense. May God bless you all.

This legislation, from it's very proposal, never made any sense to me. Surely, it makes more sense to increase the penalties for actually being drunk than taxing the greater majority who have control of themselves. But you all ways feel better when your drunk, 5 pints for £18 aprox.
Plus you feel as if you get something for your money.( Wright or wrong )
You cant go for a walk anywhere because the police will victimize you," were you going what you doing", or you risk getting mugged.
So that's out of the question, so what do you do when theirs nothing to do! that doesn't cost the earth.
You just cant go anywhere any more its not like it was 30 40 50 years ago you could go were you like.

It costs to live and it cost to die,
Thet face it, the greed of business that's made it like this.
(something costs £2.49 from maker in china sells to a warehouse, the warehouse sells it to a shop for £7.59 and a shop will sell it for £19.99 ) All about greed.

And the pore smuck worker who makes it gets less than a penny for his or her efforts?, and that's why the world is corrupted .
That's business today! get as much as you can, as soon as you can. That's why people don't mix like they use too.
Because they live in terror of being robbed or ripped off by persons in their community .
Our culture if we have one now, as no more compassion than it did in the16th century.
Every man or woman for them self, got to be politically correct or might end up in deep do do!.
