FILM crews descended on a East Lancashire school to recapture the days of Northern Soul.

Movie makers filming the comedy/drama movie Northern Soul used Rishton’s Norden High School for key scenes in the 1970s flick.

The major movie stars Steve Coogan, Ricky Tomlinson and pop star Lisa Stansfield.

Norden youngsters were happy to join in as extras, wearing specially badged 1970s school uniforms as filming got underway at the Stourton Street school on Friday.

School headteacher Tim Mitchell explained: “The filmmakers got in touch with us because they were looking for a school with just the right 1970s look.

“Sections of the school are just perfect for their purposes, we fit their bill.

“They even found an existing blackboard in one of the rooms when they were adding props. They’ve used the school hall and certain other classrooms.

“The kids have been delighted to get involved and loved the uniforms they were given to try on. It’s been a big excitement for the whole school.”

Movie director Elaine Constantine is shooting scenes for the film, which tells the story of two music-loving lads who get caught up in the scene, at various sites in the county.

Other locations used for the British-backed movie included Blackburn’s King George’s Hall, which became the setting for a Wigan Casino-style all-nighter.

The Northern Soul movie, which describes a youth culture that ‘changed a generation’, is expected to be released next spring.
