BT closer to 300 jobs boost in Accrington

RECRUITMENT has started for 300 new call centre jobs in Accrington.

Bringing a huge boost to East Lancashire, telecoms firm BT is set to become one of Hyndburn’s biggest employers in the private sector.

So far 74 vacancies have been filled for the base in St James Square.

The successful candidates will be based at the Globe Centre when BT opens in October.

Mike Damms, chief executive of the East Lancashire Chamber of Commerce, said the call centre was very welcomed.

He said: “In the area we have a formidable manufacturing sector and we are now pleased to welcome the service sector.

“It’s good for young people to know that the service sector is also a good route to take and there are many opportunities out there.

”Although the recruitment process has been drawn-out and taken quite some time we will look forward to having another big employer in the area.”

The opening will replace company Sitel's call centre, which was based at the Globe before it closed in 2010 with the loss of 250 jobs.

A spokesperson for BT said: “Recruitment is going very well – we continue to see strong interest in the positions. The first tranche of recruitment will continue for at least the next six months.”

Hyndburn Council leader Miles Parkinson said he welcomed the opening.

I do hope BT are not paying these people the national minimum wage. I also hope BT are employing these people directly and not through an agency or other company.

Will they be allowed a travelling time allowance in view of Hyndburn's traffic "management"?. Do they know that the person responsible for traffic management in Hyndburn think nothing of having road works at two or even three major junctions at the same time?

Little wonder that there is a problem attracting shoppers to the town. It's quicker driving across the centre of most major cities.

Where is this "formidable manufacturing sector" hyndburn has?

It's good to see jobs being created in Accrington but soome people really have some serious delusions.

I just hope the jobs go to people out of work and not to the likes of the polish where they have one or two jobs already.

@Black Car Guy 'not sure why i'm even lowering myself to bite at your comment but... would love to know when and where you did your research on Polish people and this job myth - maybe you could upload your statistical findings on here!!! "they have one or two jobs already" oooh maybe they might have 3 now, I wonder when they sleep, errrr. So uneducated, and in my view thats racist, doubt you would dare to make the same comment replacing Polish with Asians or Blacks" Clueless
