BLACKBURN MP Jack Straw is to complain to BBC governors over last night’s Panorama film which portrayed Shadsworth as if it was “an uncharted part of Africa”.

He is furious that the docum-entary sensationalised the estate’s problems, and ignored progress in recent years.

Having seen the actual film last night, he rejected BBC claims it was a fair portrayal of life on ‘Shad’.

Mr Straw echoed comments made by community leaders that ‘Trouble on the Estate’ depicted Shadsworth as a crime and drug-ridden community similar to Chatsworth in TV’s “Shameless”.

He said last night: “I shall be writing a strongly-worded complaint to the BBC Trust about this film. It is unacceptable to send a reporter from London who then treats Shadsworth like a Victorian explorer in an uncharted part of Africa.

“The estate does have problems, but so do many others everywhere else in Britain. They viewed Shadsworth through the eyes of a handful of well-known dysfunctional families and implied everybody on the estate shares that outlook.

“The few positives mentioned were simply fig-leaves.

“The film badly misrepresented the lifestyles of the great majority on the estate, and sought to sensationalise its problems.

“I have spent 33 years as its MP, and know the area extremely well.

“It went through serious problems in the 80s and early 90s – just as many similar areas did when much of manufacturing collapsed.

“But the area has improved significantly since then.

“As for ‘drugs, anti-social behaviour, family break-ups, and joblessness’ – such circumstances are not confined to classic estates.

“But these days there is overall much better social behaviour, and significantly less crime.

A Panorama spokesman maintained the film was fair, and rejected claims that residents had been encouraged to behave badly.

He said: “It is categorically untrue that the programme team sought to influence the behaviour of anyone they filmed, and certainly didn’t ask them to put up hoods, as is evident from the youngsters featured in the film.

“We didn’t edit out anybody on the basis that they worked.

“Indeed, working people are featured in the film, and we never interviewed anyone who identified themselves to us as a nurse. ”

Go and live on the estate for a bit Jack and see what you think...And yes the same could be said for other estates in Ne Lancs...Thing is Jack if people had jobs to go to they wouldn't live like that, but neither you nor this set of unelected clowns we have running the country seem to care about that.

To be honest I think Jack Useless Straw is a joke, these people need to get out and get a job instead of living off the state... As one woman said in the programme she has better things to be doing than going down to the job centre every couple of weeks and they should leave her alone, WELL IF SHE GOT A JOB SHE WOULDNT HAVE TO GO TO THE JOB CENTER. There is a job out there for EVERYONE, but some people are just dragged up and don’t care about their self or society and are just LAZY!!! Another one said she gets £1100 a month to live on and feed her two children, and will get her rent and council tax paid for... most people don’t get that a month and work full time. Maybe we should all go out and have children and live off the state if people are getting that much money a month for doing so... It is an embarrassment to Blackburn, and an embarrassment to this country… These people don’t work, but find money for drugs, as I said before the ‘LADY’ who said she has better things to do with her time than go to the job centre and who is on benefits can afford to smoke, smoke illegal drugs, and also drink as it shown her do in the programme, also her teenage daughter smokes drugs, So my question is WHO IS PAYING FOR THESE DRUGS, DRINKS AND CIGARETTES? Well us the tax payers are doing, benefits are to live of week to week and not there for low life’s to get high off. There benefits should be stopped and she should be forced to get a job like the rest of us working people…

Jack Straw willl complain about the BBC showing all of that anti social behaiour that didn't happen and isn't happening all over and all of the time?

He'd be better of complaining to the lacklustre police, the overly lenient courts and the benefits minister.
If only Labour could have a few terms in power to sort this mess out...oh, hang on, they did.

What did the residents of Shadsworth expect protraying any estates good points does not make good television. The council can take some of the blame for the way Lancashires estates are they dont care because they do not have to live on them. They go home to nice houses in nice areas. It has also been a well known fact that the police know about the drugs, thefts and antisocial behaviour on all our estates but like every one else they choose to igmore it. It is a real shame that the people who are law abiding citizens of the estates are now tarred with the same brush. The people in the documentary only wanted their 15 minutes of fame and all for the wrong reasons. Why not film on Green lane livseybranch road or Highercroft /Fishmoor NO cant do that because it does not sound like CHATSWORTH.SHAME ON YOU FOR ALLOWING THEM TO FILM IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Quite agree, come on Jack - if Shads that 'decent' a place to live, lets see you set up camp there without your minders...no I didn't think so!

What the programme did was highlight what the nation has been saying for years...overpaying benefits to people like Alwyn Page is ruining society & people like Jack Straw & Co are condoning it!

There wasn't one truly valid reason for her to be paid £1100 per month (an average salary for most) in benefits so she can sit at home smoking drugs, drinking (even her son complained about the amount of wine she put in that disgusting slop she referred to as 'tea') & then moaning about having to go to the job centre...apparently she was upset by that inconvenience! She, like hundreds of thousands of other up & down the country, is lazy & job shy...MAKE THEM PAY FOR THEIR OWN DRINK & DRUGS BY MAKING THEM GET JOBS & STOP MAKING US HARD WORKING FOLK PAY TOWARDS IT!

Add to this never ending pot of money for scumbags, the cost of all the social services etc needed to support them, the policing, NHS etc...politicians are draining the country's finances on people who simply don't deserve it...and clearly don't need as much as they get.

Superb that one Jack. Out of africa theory really does sum it all up. Nice one. :0).
I watched the documentary and it didn't disappoint. Lots of trackie bottoms, blue tattoos and the occasional glimpse of Tyson the dog. Coupled with the mini moto's
Olwyns classic line, I can't get up for a job because I'm on medication to get me to sleep. Needs uppers during the day to get motivated after smoking weed, then can't sleep so takes some downers so can't get up the day after. Its a female Michael Jackson. Get up, at the bus stop, don't stop till you get enough. OOOOooooowww. Chamoine.
Brilliant who writes this script.
Hey Olwyn, I'll let you in on it. If you stopped smoking weed, you wouldn't need the uppers. Then as you don't need the uppers, you wouldn't need the downers afterwards, so that would make you able to get yer lazy arse out to work. Felt sorry for the kids.
Would have been better suited putting the Youth Zone in the middle of shad instead of the middle of town. Maybe they can build another one instead of wasting money on orbital routes and bus lanes.

FireFly has hit the nail on the head. The problem is not the estate but a v v small minority of people and their attitudes morals values and principals. And this outdated benefit system is a large part of the problem. As a civilised country we need a benefit system that looks after and protects it's citizens during times of personal crisis - illness, temporary joblessness etc. The problem is, and has been for decades, that, as with anything that is open to abuse, there will always be the Olwen Page's of life who will exploit it to the max. Benefits should be limited to the parent/s and first child only. Unemployment benefit should have a time limit. Whilst the likes of this "lady" are in receipt of in excess of £1100 per month benefits, there is no incentive to work. And that's were it all starts! "The devil makes work for idle hands"

Utter paranoia, chips on shoulders, etc. - at no point did the programme say or imply that ALL of the estate's residents were like that - it did show examples of normal people, such as the recently unemployed family, the elderly woman whose garden was being attacked and the disabled man who was being taunted.
However you want to dress it up, by any measure Shad has had a much higher than average proportion of layabout adults and delinquent kids than anywhere else in the town (and most other places in the country for that matter).
Jack Straw and the Council are more than aware of this - the national statistics are backed up by the council's own internal stats and budgetary figures, in which Shad tops nearly all the league tables for dysfunction.
Rather than trying to spin their way out of it, a bit of honesty would be nice - there can be little doubt that they're TRYING to improve the place.
If Shadsworth is the fantastic, inclusive, caring community that Mr Straw, the Council management and senior Police have spent the last 24 hours desperately trying to portray, can they please explain why it deserves to be in receipt of so much more local and national funding than anywhere else, and why none of them live there?

Before Jack Straw has had a chance to act in anyway he sees fit, people choose to belittle him. Give him a chance.
The TV documentary may not have done Blackburn any favours, but neither did some of the comments from people used for the show.
Bottle of wine visible, cigarette in hand, and depressed? Financial help for carpets and decorating and depressed? Income from benefits and depressed?
There are many needy people in this country at this time, and for genuine people, the financial aid is a necessity which I do not begrudge, but seeing people lounging in the chair, receiving benefits and all that comes with it begs the question - why should I bother working when I could possibly stay at home with a glass of wine and a cigarette and benefits rolling in?

Face up to it Jack! Your now no other than a retired New Labour spokesman pretending never to have had Conservative leanings. You’ve done very well for yourself shielded under a party that has always had full support within Blackburn come what may. A very clever well paid pretender who has always known which side his butter is spread upon, knowing that he could never lose!

Shadsworth is what 33 years as MP for Blackburn has achieved. These are the people that you were supposed to protect under a true Labour banner but you have failed all of them as well as the community as a whole. Would you like to live there in Blackburn for a few weeks stay Jack?

Question: Is the photo real or simply another Jack Straw make believe?

Shad, Blackburn, it's not even in the same league of crime to Leeds, Liverpool, East Manchester, Nottingham or especially London.

This TV was just easy pickings, no trouble to film. Can you imagine if this had been done on Liverpool? Aired the week that the lies of the media in the 1980's are exposed?

My second point is this program have had another aganda? There seems to be hysteria brewing over the lazy jobless wasting our taxes. Every day new stories about benefits abuse, highlighting the wrong doing.

5 years ago, we knew about it going on but it wasn't so hotly debated, when are we all so interested now?

This is all part of the plan to get us onside when more cuts come along

I'm sure that those who appeared in the programme are not representative of all of the residents of Shadsworth but they do represent the feckless people that our benefit system supports.
People from a generation of families who were brought up in a benefit culture, who know no other way to live and who have never and will never contribute anything to society.
The benefit system encouraged by the Thatcher government and continued by subsequent governments is to blame for allowing these misfits in society to continue in this vane.

I`m sure nowhere near everyone in Shad is as bad as the ones in the show and the ones in the show were picked to make "good" TV. That said, the ones on the show seem beyond help. They are unreachable, feral, scumbags. It was very sad viewing. It's not Jack Straws fault, it's not the council's fault. These people exist everwhere and short of locking them up or cutting their benefits to the extent were they stave to death, is there anything that can be done for this underclass? You can't help people with no desire to help themselves, they are just products of our welfare state and the only alternative is to have them homeless and starving. For some it would be the kick up the arse they need, for others it would equal the death penalty.

Shadsworth in isolation is as bad as the inner-city places you refer to, the only positive being the relative lack of gun-crime.
The measure most commonly used is Indices of Multiple Deprivation looks at a whole host of data including income, employment, educational attainment & crime.
What makes Shad 'easy pickings' - surely it would have been easier for the BBC to visit somewhere on their doorstep such as London or Salford - backwater towns like Blackburn are usually too much of trek.
Maybe the sudden focus on 'scroungers' is because so many working people are now suddenly hoping to rely on the welfare-state safety-net they've been contributing to for years only finding it's tattered and frayed after decades of abuse by these scroungers.

Reading some of the comments on this issue, somehow suggests that Jack Straw is responsible for all that was documented given that he has been our MP for 33 years.
He is not responsible for people quite content to reap in all the benefits available which keeps them in wine and cigarettes. It is the system which is wrong. One person included in the programme claimed depression. This might gives others an idea - Go to the GP, get some anti-depressant medication and then sit back and collect the benefits, free carpets, free home decor and probably much more. Wouldn't surprise me if there wasn't a free holiday thrown in as well.
The people who have pride, and go out to work must fume when they see people who sit on their backsides and claim everything going. The more kids, the more benefit. Makes me furious that I have worked all my life, have not/do not claim any benefit at all, and then whilst watching a documentary on an area in my home town, I see how the other half lives. I ask myself one question - 'What kind of fool am I?'

I grew up in Highercroft in the 80s, council estates were pretty much the same then as they are now. Full of lazy workshy scumbags.

Meanwhile the said MPs, who made all the promises to us, become (if they weren't already) millionaires on the back of their massive salaries, expenses and outside earnings.

No wonder during the recent riots a sizeable proportion of those on the streets were they who we would normally describe as decent.

Time to put things into perspective and put a touch of reality into the equation

i) The Man of Straw is bound to speak of his outrage as would MPs of any other town would so so if a documentary of this nature was shown about their constituency
2) Shadsworth and its residents are no different from any broad brush sample taken from estates the length and breadth of the UK. As the same can be said about High Street shops.
3) As one comment said "There will always be people of the worst. examples shown who will milk the system" This is true and has been so for the 70 years I have been on this planet.
4) Politicians be they MPs or Councillors have always made mistakes, more often than not not in touch on a daily basis with their Constituencies or Wards. This leaves them open to (quite often) pursue their own self righteous, self advancement ideas. More so making them toeing "The Party Line"
5) Defining where finance investment, practical planning and solutions seem to be as a result of (4) and never moreso in this PC age.
6) Shadsworth has suffered in the same way as many estates in many towns suffering a similar fate as e.g. estates in Burnley where millions were constantly being channelled and wasted into Stoneyholme where it was perceived that the Asian Community was being given priority. One of the "kept under the carpet" reasons for the riots which also took place in Oldham and others.
7) As long as politicians continue to follow the Blairite/Brown diktat to ruin Traditional Britain and the current incumbents keep following the same bent of multiculturism then places such as Shadsworth will continue to fester.
8) As long as weak willed politicians, Judges, self aggrandaisers and do-gooders continue to have the greatest pressure on our lives then people like the awful woman and her family will always continue to exist.
9) What needs to happen is efficiency in how benefits are distributed and of course the amounts. Practical and down to earth hands on help, proper jjobs with pay that is more beneficial than benefits and reduced taxation to encourage people to work
10) LASTLY; documentaries such as this would not get past any broadcasters benchmarks unless it contains some form of sensationalism. They use the rule that good news is boring and doesn't sell newspapers or programmes. In all fairness the voice over at the end stated that Shadsworth is typical of so many estates across the country.

What is there to complain about Jack??
They have simply highlighted the truth!! The programme was about run down and deprived estates like this clearly is!!!!!

Take note and sort it out instead of living in a dream world and taking this documentry personally.

If the government didnt hand out money left right and centre to the wrong groups of people Shadsworth wouldnt be in the state that it is!!!!!!!!

And as for the folk on the estate.... a bit of self pride wouldnt go a miss...........

As stated on a previous post this programme by the BPC is a diversion. It is an attempt o deflect people from talking about the serious criminals and crime that is evident in Blackburn. That is the grooming and sexual abuse of underage White girls and the dealing and supply of Class A drugs by certain criminal "communities" living and exploiting the people of Blackburn. Also as previously stated the BPC should have concentrated on the real criminals instead of picking an easy target on an exclusively White estate. Perhaps they should, in the interests of balance, go under cover on an exclusively Asian estate in the town and film exactly what goes on there. Will they do this? Of course not, too dangerous for the BPC cowards. As for the towns MP? I would not waste my time commenting. We deserve better we really do.

Nobody cares about the under-classes or me..well the elite don't care about the under-classes or middle-classes or anyone who's not a member of Skull and Bones. There is no need for all the people that were created for the industrial revolution or the middle-class office and public sector staff that thought they had a job for life NONE OF THESE PEOPLE ARE NO LONGER NEEDED..and Shad is a consequence..Bless..
"quote: "growing up between drugs and hate" what a statement from that young lad..Elders should hold their heads in shame and pray for the foregiveness they will need on deaths door

The next collapse of world economies is only weeks away the EURO is about to go belly up taking the DOLLAR with it FOOD PRICES ARE ABOUT TO DOUBLE ..Stock up on long life foods before prices are jacked up..The price inrease in foods are guarenteed due to failed crops worldwide.Jeremy Grantham, “a closely followed value investor and co-founder of asset management firm GMO LLC” advised speculators to jump on land, water, and agricultural holdings because “a hungry and thirsty world is growing.” Grantham declared, “you can’t triple a population in a lifetime without consequences.” .

Yes, there are crops that have not failed, and thanks to their food distribution system, them w@nkers in North America will be able to get what they want. But there will be less food in the world for the rest of us, and in vying for it our wallets will be emptier. And there is also the breadbasket factor: all the people who depend on American-grown grains. They are the world’s biggest supplier of wheat and corn—sales of US grains really do feed the world. Crop failure in the US corn and wheat belts, also crops are stressing in the other food growing nations, which means famine elsewhere. When winter comes and you are paying more at the checkout, and reading about volatile food costs and food riots are kicking off in Europe Africa or the Middle East, and perhaps seeing governments tumble, this year’s desperate weather will be a big reason why...Certainly not some loser up shad scamming the system. And on closing I would like to say congratulations to the Panorama programme for depicting such an honest look at the difficulties faced by families scraping by on pennies each week and of course for showing that the only person who is earning any money in Shad was the off licence/shop owner. In a way I can see why Mr Jack Straw was a little upset about the programme going out.. THE BBC IS A PROPAGANDA MACHINE...who work for the government who work for the Banksters and they are trying to create divisions in what is already a splintered society. As a people divided we are weak but together we are to strong for them.. Together we could even topple the globalist Banksters who have driven us all against each other its not to late to save our lifes and drive these Banksters back under the stone they rose from.

Please Please Please Please don't blame the poor disabled unemployed or system players like those in Shad for the worlds demise. The Banksters are the ones you need to vent your anger at and together as one we could gain back control of our own destiny like we had before the deception started on 9-11. The people don't want to die starving on a run down council estates some people just want to earn enough to feed house and educate their children to the best of their ability but without our globalist leaders stopping all conflict and redistributing all wealth across the world we don't stand a chance of serviving the next coming decade "if we get that long".? before the human kull begins in..? Many , many years ago , when life was hard , and I lost my job when the company for whom I worked was taken over , I took the only job I could find .

WOW - the worst route was Penny St to Shad and back .

Horrible in the morning (school kids -also known as "shad-rats") .

Ok during the day - when decent people got on . There were some lovely OAPs - really grateful for the bus .

Spectacularly bad at night .
Violent drunks coming back from Blackburn .

Prozzies going to Blackburn .

Quite a few drivers refused to go on that route .

Luckily those days are over .

For me .

What's the situation nowadays ?

I do not live on Shad, but I have seen the program on TV. My feelings during and after the program were of shame, sadness and anger.

Shame: that there are people living in such self-induced squalor, not in Africa, Jack, but on our doorstep.

Sadness: this will continue to deteriorate as there is no easy solution. Shad is not alone, there are similar areas throughout the country. Bit of a contrast to all the back-slapping of the Olympics!

Anger: parents who cannot and will not control their children. What do we expect when children are not taught right from wrong and see parents with no work ethic? We seriously need to consider conscription for people reaching 18 who are out of school and out of work.

Well they picked on Burnley and Edinburgh regarding the high percentage of Incapacity and DLA claiments in those areas and now its Blackburn's turn to sensationalise a small ninority,
The problem started in the 60s by lenient do gooders ridding the country of both corporal and capital punishment and allowing rapists and such probation so they could go out and commit their crimes again.I sometimes wonder if Germany had won the last world war would we be in the same situation as we are suffering now with their intolerance of crimes against their views? Maybe we can count our blessings for living here in England and not having a police state ruling with an iron fist.

Roya 1710,
