Olympic heroes in Blackpool Illuminations switch on

THIS year’s Blackpool lights switch-on is taking a ‘Best Of British’ theme, with the honour of pushing the button falling to five Olympic heroes.

Beth Tweddle, Greg Rutherford, Luke Campbell, Sophie Hosking and Max Whitlock will throw the switch together on the Festival Headland in the shadow of Blackpool Tower at 9.25pm.

The centenery of the lights will headlined by X-Factor-winning girl band Little Mix, with support from Amy MacDonald, Noisettes, Paloma Faith, Scouting for Girls, Lemar, Lawson, The Overtones, and 80s legend Rick Astley.

Gymnast Beth Tweddle from Liverpool secured a bronze medal on the uneven bars at the Olympics – making her the most decorated British gymnast in history.

Greg Rutherford became the first Briton to win Olympic gold in the long jump, jumping 8.31 meters, since 1964.

Amateur boxer, from Hull, 24 year old Luke Campbell won gold in Boxing´s bantamweight division.

Sophie Hosking, won the gold medal for the lightweight double sculls.

Max Whitlock, was a member of Britain´s gymnastics team, where he helped the team claim a bronze medal at the team final.
