A "LOST" 20-year-old man who stumbled into an Accrington farm yard stole a satellite navigation system from a parked car.

But the direction- finding device led Daniel Paul Reid straight into custody when he was detained by the car owner and arrested by police.

Reid, of Belfield Road, Accrington, pleaded guilty to theft.

He was sentenced to 28 days in prison.

The court heard Reid was found in the grounds of a farm in Millerfold Avenue, Accrington, at 11.30pm.

The owner, Ian Moss, detained Reid and called the police. Mr Moss later discovered the navigation system missing and a search revealed a rucksack containing the equipment and personal papers belonging to Reid.

Jonathan Taylor, defending, said Reid's problems started when he lost his accommodation in Burnley and was trying to find somewhere to live in Accrington.

"On this night he had taken various tablets and had been drinking," said Mr Taylor.

"He is not entirely certain how he ended up where he did or even where he ended up.

"He was in effect lost and that is when he stumbled across this farm."
