Accrington lap dancing club meets with disapproval

PROPOSALS to site a lap dancing club in Accrington town centre have been criticised by members of the clergy.

The plans have been described as ‘exploitative to women’ and as bringing the ‘wrong values’ into the town centre by members of the cloth.

The scheme has attracted a mixed response from neighbours of the proposed Blackburn Road venue, with some welcoming it as a boost to trade.

Others, like Age UK manager Tasneem Khamker said the plans made her ‘wary’.

She said: “In winter we lock up after dark, so it is a bit of a worry. I don’t know what sort of clientele this will attract and so it makes me wary.

"I was surprised there hasn’t been more public objection before now.”

The news has also attracted criticism from Accrington Reverend Kevin Logan, who has described it as bringing the ‘wrong values’ into the town. The Bishop of Burnley has added that the plans exploit women.

Bishop John Goddard said: “These sorts of establishments send the wrong message about women.

I think women are worth more. “I think all people are worth more than that.”

His opinion was echoed by Reverend John Binks at Accrington’s St John’s with St Augustine’s Church said: “These plans do make me uncomfortable.

“I don’t think women should be exploted and I dont think men should be encouraged to exploit them. I think men are the weaker sex in these situations and are led into treating women as sex objects.”

However applicant, Antony Carr said it would be an ‘upmarket establishment’ that would bring jobs and trade into the town.

He said: “Everyone I have spoken to has been really positive. It will be an upmarket extablishment which will bring jobs and visitors to the town.”

Other traders echoed the view it could boost trade.

Martin Dullenty at Quattro’s restaurant said: “They would be our upstairs neighbours and I don’t mind. “I think it will bring more trade our way, if anything”.

Mohammad Afzan, owner of Alisha’s clothing store, said: “I’m not worried about it. Wetherspoons boosted trade in this part of town and this may do the same”.

The proposals to open Eye Candy lap dancing bar has been granted a Sexual Entertainment Venue licence, but has yet to be granted an alcohol licence or planning permission.

Is this a lap dancing club, where members dance as they do laps; or is this a lap-dancing club, where members dance on laps?

Wot's it got to do with the Burnley Bishop Basher they have a similar club in Burnley. After all it will only be a glorified Tuppaware Party.

The bishop and reverend can pray in their church - now there will be another place for everyday guys to enjoy. Where they'll be still be saying "praise the lord", "hallelujah" and praying to be blessed by heavenly angels. Amen.

I find myself unable to listen to members of the clergy after learning that 2 women were married to each other in an Oswaldtwistle Church on Saturday 23rd October 2011

Rather go to a lap dancing club than abuse young boys, like our so called men of the cloth !!

Are they upset because it is only women lap dancers and not their preferred choice?

The church isn't in any position whatsoever to comment on this issue. Bunch of discriminatory mysogenists.

And as for Logan talking about the "wrong values", be thankful that we don't have to live by his.

The question is...why? Why do we need to have lap dancing clubs in small towns such as Accrington. If people want to go to these kinds of places they can travel further a field to Blackpool for eg. It brings the town down and brings unsavory people into our communities not to mention how places like this degrade women. This is the 21st Century, Where are our morals and standards gone. Shame on you Accrington Council!!!

I'm with the Bishop John Goddard. It is degrading and anyone who says different have very low morals and standards. I would hate to think one of our daughters would be working in this establishment. She will grow up thinking showing you bit's and bobs is the way to go and we all know there is more then lap dancing that goes on in these places.

Well said Mr Afzan, common sense applied.

Although never having been to a lap dancing venue I not only know people who have, I know people who have made a very nice wage packet out of it and set themselves up in business after a few short years. Something they would never otherwise have achieved.

Plenty of my work mates go to these places. They aren't dirty old pervy men, they are just normal blokes. It's a lap dancing club not a brothel.

I generally don't listen to men in big purple dresses commenting on what other people do. You keep praying to your pagan wooden effigy whilst performing your drone like demonic chanting. Its all a bit too gothic and dark for me. Its time you moved on.
Imagine how big the congregations would be if all bishops were female, under 25, wore sussies and had big breasts. You need to move with the times my purple headed warrior.

So the bishop of burnley is against women bishops and against women dancing on tables.

Perhaps he just wants to keep them in missionary positions....

When was the last time the Bishop and Reverend went a Lap Dancing Bar?? How can they say it is expoiting women? I am sure the dancers are very well paid, and pole dancing, i am sure is an art in itself! Whos to say there wont be 'Chippendale Nights'. Then we can 'expoilt men too hahaa' Its entertainment, thats all 'Fun', who can complain about that? Some people may like to see another £1 shop there or even a Tesco express. I think its a great idea!

As for the lap dancing bar attracting unsavoury characters, where have you been for the past TEN years?? Take a good look around Accrington now!
We have a LOT more to worry about than a lap dancing club!!

I am sure there are unsavoury people in any town. I don't think a Lap Dancing club will attract more. It will however, create jobs, and instead of the people of Accrington and surrounding areas, having to travel away to places such as Blackpool and Manchester, to spend their money, why not have people come to our town and spend their money?? It is not about degrading women, if you have never been to one, then how can anyone comment! It has been passed by the council and the police, so why didn't anyone object when they had the chance??? Who says its just for the fellas anyway????? Does anybody know anything what they are passing judgement on??

hettygirl is correct - many dancers say that in some clubs half or even more of the clients that come in to watch them are actually female.

With high profile celebrities like Katy Perry also visiting lap dancing clubs - most establishments nowadays aren't dirty raincoat brigade stuff - they're actually talented lap / pole dancers and that are highly skilled entertainers... whether they flash the odd bit of flesh or are naked, the the church should respect god's handy work and if they can't they need to study harder.
