A FORMER social worker has created a ‘haven’ for people with learning disabilities on a Hyndburn farm.

Lynn Fielding said the new 23-acre Rishton attraction would provide the only animal-themed therapy currently available in Lancashire.

Harwood Edge Care Farm, on the site of the former animal therapy centre Lord’s House Farm, will be complete with emu, deer, birds, horses, llamas, cows and sheep as well as rabbits, chickens, guinea pigs and micropigs.

The mum-of-four, who has 24 years’ experience as a social worker specialising in mental health issues, said the site would also cater to disadvantaged youngsters.

She said: “There is nothing else like this in Lancashire and may find contact with the animals very therapeutic.

“I am hoping it will make a real difference to people’s lives.

"With all the support centres closing down, there are lots of people who need these facilities.”

Other activities expected to be on offer include llama trekking, nature walks, vegetable growing, cookery classes, numeracy and IT courses as well as camping events.

The former Lords House Farm facility at the Wilpshire Road site closed when the organisation relocated to a smaller site in Cumbria.

An open day at Harwood Edge Care Farm is taking place on Saturday, ahead of plans to open on Monday, May 2.
