MERCER Hall’s revamped leisure facilities have finally been unveiled.

The long-awaited new-look centre opens to the public today following a launch for dignitaries, councillors and community groups on Friday.

Contractors working on the Queen Street centre finished the revamp at 2am that morning in a bid to get facilities ready for guests.

The new-look centre now boasts a state of the art spa, a large glass-fronted steam room, Swedish sauna, changing areas, hi-tech music system and a large relax and 'chill-out' area.

Other features include a walk-through ‘monsoon’ shower and direct access to the centre’s 20-metre heated swimming pool.

The £190,000 investement, including a new art deco reception and larger car park, will complement the existing pool, gym and studio facilities.

Nigel O’Rourke, from Great Harwood Otters swimming club, said the club had been based at Mercer Hall since 1968.

He said: “It’s a huge event for us because it's our base and we are here all the time.

"The revamp has had a tremendous effect on the kids. They are already more positive and raring to go.

"Staff are excited too. Everyone feels very positive about the future.”

Just months ago the centre was threatened with closure after a £400,000 Sport England grant was withdrawn.

But after a £190,000 investment by Hyndburn Borough Council, bosses said the centre would soon boast some of the most advanced facilities in the area.

Coun Peter Clarke said the success of the revamp marked the end of a long journey from days when it appeared it would have to close.

He said: “It is absolutely fantastic and residents will certainly see the benefit.

“To get facilities like this anywhere else would cost £50 a month membership whereas here it is in the region of £20 a month.

“Closure was not an option. Thanks to careful management by financial director Joe McIntyre, we were able to get together the funds we needed.”
