HYNDBURN Council is set to bring in a new redundancy policy as it plans for cuts in local government funding.

The authority has not made a single redundancy in the past two years and bosses said the new move was just a precaution.

It said that where compulsory redundancies were unavoidable the council must handle them fairly.

A council spokesman said: “Earlier this year, when it became apparent that the economic downturn was likely to have an impact on council funding, we felt it would be useful to review our policy on dealing with redundancies.

"This covers how we will consult and select staff in the event of compulsory redundancies.”
