A BAKERY manager who has devoted three decades to sport and healthy living in Burnley is set to retire.

Born and ‘bread’ in Rochdale, Duncan Lees, 60, started work for Warburtons in 1974, but quickly rose to the top and was appointed factory manager at the firm’s Billington Road site in 1981. He then progressed to general manager in 1991.

Over the past 35 years, Duncan has earned his crust at the famous family firm, managing 320 people and overseeing million pounds worth of investment at the factory, off Rossendale Road.

But he said he was most proud of the links he set up between the firm and local community, particularly by supporting children’s sports clubs.

The married father-of-three, who lives in The Lees, Cliviger, said he had been behind the firm’s decision to sponsor what is now known as the Warburtons Youth Football League, which involves around 150 children each season.

He has also used the well-known brand to sponsor the youth arm of Burnley Rugby Club and has supported Burnley FC’s women’s teams for 10 years.

Duncan has also sponsored Lowerhouse Cricket Club for the last decade and instigated the firm’s acquisition of a box at Turf Moor.

Through his senior position at the firm, he said he has also been involved in a range of fundraising events for Pendleside Hospice.

And he has set up links with breakfast clubs in deprived parts of Burnley, making sure they are provided with bread.

“It’s where I wanted to position the business in the town,” he said.

“I have always tried to support youth through sport and healthy living.”

Duncan, whose favourite loaf is the Warburtons Farmhouse, said he planned to spend more time travelling the world with his wife in their caravan following his retirement.

He said: “I am apprehensive about retiring because it’s a massive change. I’ve worked in a hard industry. I left school at 15 and went to baking college and have worked in the industry since I was 18.

“But I’m still fit and want to do something completely different and enjoy myself.”
