TESCO bosses have been "staggered" by the clamour for jobs at their new Bury store opening next month.

More than 2,200 people applied to the company for the 400 jobs on offer at the multi-million pound supermarket in Peel Way.

The response was so overwhelming that Tesco was forced to hold an additional open day.

Tesco personnel manager, Heather Woods, said: "We're staggered by the response. To cope with the demand, we had to hold a fourth open day."

A recruitment campaign for the 400 jobs is under way and a recruitment centre has been set up in Knowsley Street, Bury, to deal with the flood of enquiries.

More than 2,200 people attended the four open days which allowed job hunters to find out more about the employment opportunities and the benefits of working for Tesco.

Newly-appointed general manager for the store, Mr Mike Howe, together with his team, is now in the process of interviewing candidates.

New recruits will be taken on in stages and trained at nearby Tesco stores, ready for the Bury opening in October.
