A SOCIETY founded more than a century ago to promote literature and reading among Leigh's poor is threatened with closure.
The Leigh Literature Society, which held its first meeting in 1878, needs to find a volunteer to take over as secretary. Former secretary Hilda Gaskell retired in April last year after 24 years but no one has yet come forward to take her place. The society, which was created by small group of educated people, is even credited with a major part in the founding of the Leigh Library.
Former secretary Hilda Gaskell, who is now group president, said: "Unless someone steps into the breach very soon, it seems inevitable that the group will cease to exist." There are around 50 members who discuss a wide range of topics from travel to architecture.
The group meets from October to March every Monday, from 7.30pm to 9pm, in the Derby Room of Leigh Library.
