MANY people have asked for zebra crossings and other traffic calming measures at accident blackspots such as that on Montague Street in Blackburn at its junction with Johnston Street.
Over the past year at least five pedestrians have been struck by cars. One, an elderly lady who was the victim of a hit-and-run, was lucky to survive. Add to this, the weekly rear-end shunts and near misses and you get the picture.
However, this area has a zebra crossing -- but in a location that is totally unsuitable.
Drivers emerging from Johnston Street turning right into Montague Street are too busy looking for oncoming traffic to notice the pedestrian on the crossing.
The crossing should never have been built there, but I am sure it will be moved once it has claimed its first fatality.
For traffic calming measures to work, it must be the right system in the right place. This is not happening at present, as the "accident waiting to happen" outside Montague Health Centre shows.
