ROCKET attacks on pensioners' homes angered estate residents who have petitioned Greater Manchester Chief Constable Michael Todd for help.

They want more police patrols in the Shakerley area and a firm stance against the firework-hurling yobs who are making life a misery on the Tyldesley estate.

"They have been firing rockets directly at houses and terrifying people. Their behaviour is very intimidating," claims a spokesman for the group who are fed-up with anti-social antics.

They say the problems stems from teenagers who gather near Shakerley Lane for noisy, night time booze-ups.

Fed-up locals have also complained to housing chiefs.

On Wednesday Trade Secretary Patricia Hewitt announced measures to tackle the anti-social use of fireworks.

They mean it will be illegal for under 18 year olds to possess fireworks in public places; ordinary members of the public will not be allowed to have powerful, 'category 4' fireworks and the fixed penalty for throwing fireworks in the street will be raised to £80.

Also on the way is a national curfew banning fireworks during anti-social hours, a noise limit and retail licence changes.
