BURNLEY striker Ian Moore was today set for a dramatic deadline day move to Leeds United.

And Clarets boss Steve Cotterill was busy planning a swoop of his own in the final hours leading up to tonight's 5pm watershed.

Moore underwent a medical at Leeds' training ground, Thorp Arch, this morning after agreeing a deal until the summer of 2007.

Both clubs last night agreed an initial £50,000 fee that will rise to £100,000 should United win promotion back to the Premiership during the next two years.

And the deal represents good business for Burnley, since one of their biggest wage earners would have walked away for nothing in the summer after not being offered a new Turf Moor deal.

It also gives Cotterill the chance to now plough Moore's hefty, pre-ITV Digital wages into strengthening a lightweight squad.

Moore, 28, said: "Obviously I am sad to be leaving Burnley because I really enjoyed my time there.

"But I'd not been offered a new contract so I started putting a few feelers out and within a couple of weeks things were bubbling.

"There has been interest from Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest and another option was Sunderland, but that was only short term and there was no guarantee of a contract next year should they get promoted.

"I have to think about my family and a two-year deal at Leeds at least gives me that security."

Moore, who became Burnley's record £1m signing in November 2000, scored exactly 50 goals in 215 appearances for the Clarets - reaching his half-century at Coventry last month.

Since then, Cotterill has signed Ade Akinbiyi and, with Dean Bowditch also joining on loan from Ipswich, Moore found himself relegated to the bench for the last two league games.

The former Tranmere and Stockport striker, who scored six goals this term, added: "Steve has come in as Burnley manager and he wants to bring his own players in, which is fair enough.

"This sort of thing has happened to bigger and better players than me in the past, so I can have no complaints.

"Obviously the assistant manager at Leeds, Sam Ellis, knows me from my time at Burnley and I'm delighted with the opportunity because you don't get many bigger clubs than Leeds outside the Premiership."

Meanwhile, Cotterill was today still working the oracle at Burnley's Mediterranean training camp as the clock ticks down to tonight's deadline.

And he has identified a mystery target he hopes to add to his squad before all player movement is put on hold until the summer shutdown.

The player involved is not linked to Cotterill's recent "cheeky bids". However, with hundreds of footballers soon joining the lengthy queue of players out of work, he is clearly aiming to steal a march on his Championship rivals ahead of the summer frenzy.
