A DRUGS runner who was helping a dealer for cash to fund his own habit has been sent to detention for a total of two years.
Burnley Crown Court heard how jobless Nathan Walker, 19, was found to have heroin and crack cocaine stashed down his underpants when police searched his Accrington home a month after he was given drugs treatment by magistrates.
The defendant, who also went burgling and shoplifting to finance his long-time addiction, had previous convictions for robbery and burglary and his criminal record stretched back five years.
Walker, of no fixed address, admitted possessing heroin and crack cocaine with intent to supply, two counts of theft and burglary at Plantation Street, Accrington, where he went to steal copper piping.
Sentencing, Recorder Andrew Thomas, QC, said the defendant had been given a chance when he received the community order and drugs programme in October last year but sadly he did not take it and the hard drugs haul was found on him.
He told Walker: "I accept you were not the person funding the supply of drugs, they were not your drugs, but you were supporting the supply of Class A drugs in your home area."
The judge said the defendant had a bad record for dishonesty but added he was extremely impressed by Walker's efforts to try and turn his life around whilst he had been on remand.
Martin Hackett, for Walker, said if he could stay drug-free he would not offend. He had support for when he was released.
