SIXTH form students at Stonyhurst College raised more than £1,000 for charity.

The three students took part in the Great North Swim in Windermere earlier this month in aid of Diabetes UK.

Freddie Liddell, from Dubai, Joe Garlington, from Hurst Green, and Eleanor Lamb, from Langho, all swam a mile to raise money for the charity chosen by Eleanor who suffers from diabetes.

Eleanor, captain of the college swimming team, said: “The water was absolutely freezing even with a wetsuit and the first 50 metres were the worst. I could see lots of fish beneath me which was weird, so I decided to do breast stroke.”

Carl Riley, the superintendent of the Stonyhurst Sports Club who also took part, said: “About 250 people were in each heat, so as we set off the water was crowded and quite choppy.

“But Windermere’s huge so we gradually spread out.

“The organisation and the crowds supporting us were great and they made you feel as though the achievement was unique to you. I’d definitely do it again.”
