Blackburn’s first vocational sixth-form centre is preparing to open its door to students.

The £6.7million building at Our Lady and St John Catholic Arts College in North Road, will welcome its first students, next week.

The sixth form, which officially opens its doors on Monday, September 7, will be purely vocational, offering practical qualifications in engineering, hospitality and catering, hair and beauty, media and business.

The commercial hair and beauty salon and restaurant will eventually be open to the general public, serviced by the college trainees.

There is also a flat which has been set up to resemble a modern hotel suite with its own kitchen, lounge, bedroom and bathroom, where students can learn housekeeping and basic life skills.

Head of Sixth Form, Carol Donnelly, said: “We have an iconic building that has been designed and built with flair. We intend to mirror that by providing the very best opportunities and experiences for our young people.”

The project was funded by the Learning and Skills Council after the Department for Children, Schools and Families, approached the school about opening a sixth form in recognition of its steady progress. Last year was the sixth consecutive year that GCSE results improved, with a 14 per cent rise to 68 per cent of pupils getting five or more good GCSEs.

Headteacher, Colette Gillen said: “This is an exciting development for the college and will provide wonderful opportunities for the young people of Blackburn.

“Ofsted described the pastoral care and guidance provided for our pupils as ‘outstanding’.

"I will ensure that there is the same commitment, in our sixth form.”

Coun Chris Thayne, executive member for children and young people, added: “This is an innovative building.”
