EMERGENCY patients were sent to hospitals up to 28 miles away after East Lancashire’s overrun A&E department was forced to close for three hours.

Bosses of the Royal Blackburn Hospital said it was the first time ever that the sheer number of patients had forced them to close A&E for such a length of time.

Critics said they were concerned that the problems showed that a single A&E unit was not enough for an area the size of East Lancashire.

But health chiefs said the new A&E had the same number of beds as the old two units combined and that the problems were caused by an ‘expected wave’ of patients.

At 7pm on Monday, 36 patients were inside A&E being assessed. Six ambulances queueing outside while another five were on their way to the A&E. They were all diverted to either Preston, Chorley, Rochdale and Airedale hospitals. Airedale General Hospital near Keighley is 28 miles away.

Bosses took the decision to close their doors to seriously-ill patients for three hours, while staff battled to clear the backlog.

A patient who was picked up by ambulance after collapsing in Burnley said he ended up at Fairfield Hospital in Bury, finding himself stranded there at 1.30am.

He said: “I had no money for a taxi, and to take me back home to Blackburn would have cost a lot. They had no patient transport, so they ended up keeping me in a bed there for the night, even though I had officially been discharged. It was ridiculous.”

One member of staff who was working in the emergency department, said: “We have had ambulances queueing up before and ended up informally asking the paramedics to keep the pressure off us, but that was the first time we’ve had to officially tell them we couldn’t take any more.

“It was horrendous. It’s always a struggle on a Monday because people come in with things they’ve been suffering with all weekend, but if we can’t cope with that, how are we going to manage over winter?”

Burnley Council leader Gordon Birtwistle, who has campaigned for the return of Burnley A&E, said: “This shows yet again that our campaign is not about politics. It’s about bringing proper services back to the people of East Lancashire.”

Coun Tony Humphrys, Blackburn with Darwen’s health scrutiny vice-chairman, added: “If the hospital has not been able to ensure that it can cope with the needs of the people of East Lancashire, then we have to be very concerned and there have to be repercussions.”

The trust’s medical director Geraint Jones said the decision to turn away patients had been taken “reluctantly”.

But he said clinical advice was that it was the only way to ensure patients would be properly cared for.

He said: “Our first priority is to ensure we provide a safe emergency service. Thanks to the commitment of our staff we were able to open fully again some three hours later and remained open.”

He paid tribute to staff, many of whom had to work overtime or even return to the hospital after they had gone home, to help deal with the influx of patients.

In an email leaked to me, an NHS worker writes that the situation is "worse than Red alert" and warns of looming disaster in the event of a pandemic.

The PCT's Commissioning Manager, Chris Endersby, who is responsible for buying the service from the hospital with taxpayer's money on our behalf, writes in the leaked mail that there will be "increased use of Pharmacy to expedite discharges". This is code for sending people home with painkillers when they should really be in hospital.

This is why we continue to fight to return services to Burnley. This is not a political campaign by a political party. This is for all the people of Burnley and Pendle who deserve decent, local services.

The news reporter Camilla Sutcliffe must be eating her own words now. Only two weeks ago she was invited into the hospital and reported that the "Hospitals can cope" , referring to Blackburn A&E.

In September, 16 operations had to be cancelled to make way for emergency beds.

Shutting down an Emergency department was never heard of before some idiot thought a single hospital such as that in Blackburn could cater for over 600,000 people (at the last East Lancashire census).

In the above article the member of staff said "We have had ambulances queueing up before and ended up informally asking the paramedics to keep the pressure off us".
Which of course means 'treat em in the ambulance until we clear our backlog'.

Disgraceful!

What you mean Mr Jones is closing the A&E and sending the Patients to another hospital was the ONLY way patients could be cared for. You had NO alternative and it's a disgrace that you and other trust board members deny that their is a capacity problem at Blackburn Royal.

Praise again to all the staff who tried their best! but let's face it, some patients would not survive if the A&E is closed.

Dr Geraint Jone's and other hospital directors have missed a simple logistic fact here. A problem shared is a problem halved.

Share the capacity between Blackburn AND Burnley by returning A&E services to Burnley General Hospital.

My Mother has been messed around no end with this hospital, waiting for a cancer op. On monday she was again almost dropped off the list through a lack of beds.
We searched the website for a complaints form, we could not find one so e-mailed to ask.
The reponse came back, not an apology or explanation, simply a form attached to an e-mail from the head of litigation.
It stinks...they may as well say "Dear patient, please pass us your blanket, we need to cover our ****"
For patients to have to travel to other hospitals through closures in one of the worlds richest nations is a complete joke.

What more evidence is required that closing Burnley A&E was a huge mistake?

Not only do people from Burnley & Pendle have to travel a longer distance to Blackburn A&E, they might then be turned away when they get there!!!

This is an absolute disgrace!

When will those in control making decisions for the hundreds of thousands of people affected by this colossal mistake listen to those of us who are paying for these services (and their wages) and give the people what they demand and need.

How many people need suffer or even die before they listen to us?

Stangely enough, the security words on this comment were 'fund-both'! Coincidence?

Whilst I know the Government do not listen to what Joe public says there is a the 10 Downing street Petition Website - http://petitions.num
ber10.gov.uk/

It would be worth creating a petition direct to the Prime Minister (and yes he has to answer it) on this as lives are now at stake and reading this article it seems to be the norm.

The petition can be set for different time lengths so when raised the link could be placed on here and then let the populous show how concerned they are.

Putting it to the mainstream tabloids would also help as well.

An absolute disgrace...
I feel sorry for the hard-working staff who must have been under an enormous amount of pressure. The politicians need to stop trying to save money at the expense of the health professionals' and the public's well being. How are we going to keep highly dedicated and trained health professionals when they are not getting the support they need from the politicians. It seems clear to me that the one A&E is NOT enough and as Winter sets in we are going to need even more resources than we did on Monday. I would suggest that Burnley A&E needs to be re-opened as extra beds IN ADDITION to what is already at Blackburn. We get hammered for taxes every way we turn so lets have some decent services in return for our hard work please!

Whilst I am in complete agreement that Burnley A&E should be re-opened, I would like to question the role the general public played on Monday's closing of Blackburn A&E.

Of the 36 patients waiting to be assessed...how many where actually seriously ill enough to be there and how many should have been to see their G.P or contacted NHS direct for referral to the G.P unit at the Royal Blackburn?

I strongly suspect that it's quite a large percentage. Granted, getting a G.P appointment can be quite a problem these days but that is no reason to burden a department which is there to treat life threatening illnesses, not aches and pains.

The member of staff quoted above said 'a number of patients had attended with things they had been suffering with over the weekend'. That speaks for itself - whilst some may well have become an emergency, the remainder were not unwell enough to be attending an 'emergency department' and therefore, they are to blame for putting untold pressure on this service and for putting the lives of other seriously ill patients at risk.

The powers that be have their own part to play in this but ultimately, if we the general public, require an A&E department to be available to treat us promoptly when seriously ill...then only go there when it is a genuine emergency.

Harleygirl is exactly right when she points out that the general public must take a lot of responibility for the overloading of Blackburn's A&E. How many of those being treated at that department could have gone to BGH's Urgent Care Centre, and how many actually needed a paramedic ambulance. Whilst I agree that the closure of Burnley's A&E was not the best decision our health authorities have ever made, it remains to be emphasised that Burnley still has a fully operational Urgent Care Centre, which - thanks to media hysteria - is now under-used. Day after day patients turn up at Blackburn whose illnesses could have been treated just as easily (and probably a lot quicker) at Burnley.
As Harleygirl says, how many of those who turn up at an A&E could have used the facilities of their own GPs out-of-hours service, their local pharmacies, or had advice and assessment from NHS Direct? How many people really needed assistance immediately - A&E is, as the name clearly tells us, for Accidents or Emergencies - not minor illnesses that people have had all day.

is that not what the triage is for to assess and weed out the patients who do not need treatment at hospital. twice i have been to hospital accompanying relatives in a blue light ambulance both from the outer reaches of pendle. i certainly would not have wanted the extra travel to blackburn and to queue up outside on arrival? that's just criminal!!!

i was a patient on monday night at blackburn royal it was disgusting the way elderly people were left in corridors. i was personally taken to the assesment ward by a very apologetic head of the trust board with a nurse around 5 hours after first arriving. it is not fair that nures doctors or ambulance staff are put under such pressure.
I call for no faith in our nhs at the moment and urge the trust board and who ever else has a say to reinstate A&E back to burnley general and stop this nonesense.

ONLY When we have people dead through the incompetence of OUR Health Chiefs will something be done.
Always the same wait for a disaster then we will fix it!
When you do get a bed at the Royal the nursing is appalling, not knowing where things are or even where to go!
With nurses from Blackburn and Burnley also Accrington being put in a New hospital and having to change from their comfort zones they ALL seem to be pulling the wrong way instead of pulling together.
Change is VERY hard to cope with but a Nurse is supposed to be a PRO if so then Show what you are made of and STOP MONING get on with the Job that you are now being payed VERY WELL for, and if you see a problem TRY and sort it!!!!!!

It is clear from what 'medical director' Geraint Jones said that he and his management team are dependant on staff to sort out the problems they created.

Any fool can say 'clinical advice says patients are better treated at a hospital that is OPEN than one that has been closed by fools who KNEW that removing A&E services from Burnley would result in this chaos!

A public health service that can no longer cater for the people, are now 'reluctant' they cannot continue.

People of Burnley and surrounding areas, Remember this...

The 'reluctancy' to care for, or treat your children and grandparents was brought about by this Labour government, and continued by trustboard managers such as Geraint Jones.

We now have a choice. To allow this criminal activity to continue in the name of financial gain, or to come together and return what is rightfully ours, our NHS!

YOU pay the wages of this trust board, yet your concerns are ignored. You are dictated to 'in your interest', yet your children are neglected and re-directed to another hospital when their needs are greatest.

Reluctant? The people of Burnley were 'reluctanct' to lose their lifeline.

How 'reluctant' does a National health service have to be before it closes its doors on the people it serves?

SHAMEFUL!
