Accrington vicar: Harry Potter is PR for paganism

A CLERGYMAN has updated his guide to paganism after the popularity of the Harry Potter books has “brought the occult into the mainstream”.

Recently retired Accrington vicar Rev Kevin Logan first released his views on new age lifestyles in the book Paganism And The Occult in 1987.

But he decided to revise and re-released the book after JK Rowling’s bestsellers about the boy wizard led to a surge in interest in the subject, especially in children.

Rev Logan said: “Harry Potter in many ways leads a good, Christian life and shows that we needed a story about a saviour. This allows us ministers to use Jo Rowling’s work to introduce Jesus as the real saviour, but there have been dangers in popularising the occult.

“Harry Potter is a PR exercise for paganism. One hundred children a month are contacting pagan organisations wanting to know how to become a witch or wizard. I did a Google search for paganism and thousands of groups were inviting me to join a coven or become involved with pagan ways – it is an issue we need to be aware of.”

Rev Logan said “new age and neopaganism” is now completely mainstream and he wanted his book to take account of modern-day living. He said while alternative medicines can be beneficial, he asks people to be wary as acupuncture and zone therapy can “disturb the spirit”.

The guide also outlines how mediums, horoscopes, tarot cards and witchcraft are more popular.

He said: “In the eighties alternative lifestyles were on the fringes of society. Now they have become the norm, so I felt it was time for an update.

“I do find it astonishing that in such a technological age we are turning to the unproven pagan ways of old.

"When somebody dies, we go to a medium, despite the fact Jesus made it clear there is no link between us and those who have gone over.

"It misleads and harms people and it’s Christian ministers who pick up the pieces.”

While including alternative medicines in his list of problem areas, Rev Logan said he wants to make it clear he is not “demonising” them.

He said: “Some do an awful lot of good – but ones that affect the forces of the body must have an effect on the spirit and that must be kept in mind.”

All the Rev is doing is trying to raise a bit more money for his retirement by regurgitating more rubbish.

His twisted interpretation of christianity is noted for homophobia, misogency, approval of vengence killings, creation mythology, removal of personal freedom, removal of personal choice, literal interpretation of testament, intolerance, prejudice and bigotry.

His interpretation of christianity is far more dangerous than anything Harry Potter has to offer.
The sooner he goes on retirement and stops spouting prejudice and intolerance on his blog the better.

And of course Harry Potter did "nothing" to get a whole generation of Kids READING BOOKS, as an alternative to the Flickering Tube, or computer games.
Books are wonderful way of expanding the mind, and should be treated as such.

Grow up Rev Logan and find something worth writing about

I've decided, I want to see Rev. Logan debate Richard Dawkins.

It would be rather one sided and short. But quite funny.

I am sure Kevin Logan expects a certain amount of ribaldry as he panders to his journalistic background. However, behind all that, there is a serious point.
J K Rowling has made a lot of money from her 'Potter' character - nothing wrong with that and I am insanely jealous! So it may be sour grapes that prompt me to say that most of her work is not to my taste, but is harmless pulp for kids.
However, it does point to the fact that there are very easy ways in which children can be caught up in the more cynical and sinister side of life.
God is dead, long live the new (or renewed) god of paganism. I looked up the uses of a very common herb, found all over the Western World. I found myself on a website telling me how to use it to make spells, how to make infusions etc. and on the same web page were links to other plants and fungi that could be 'smoked, inhaled, eaten and rubbed on the skin' for their psychedelic (i.e. narcotic) effect.
Imagine the danger to children reading this lot.
These fungi are poisonous, they will induce vomiting in an adult before the ecstatic effect takes over 'because the poisons have to be removed from the body first'. Imagine trying to console the parents of a dead six year old with that.
So, while I would not agree with everything Kevin Logan says, to paraphrase Voltaire we should defend to the death his right to say it.

I have been Pagan for over 4 years now. I have had the pleasure of emailing Rev Logan to be honest he would not appear to be anti-pagan. I was brought up in my childhood has a Christian. I married a so called Christian but she turned out after 14 years to be a nasty piece of work. I never felt really happy in the Church and when I went to work for a Pagan couple after my 1st wife and I had split up the more I watched them and associates the more interestd I became. I am a Soltary Pagan these days when I get the chance then I do rituals etc mainly for the good of mankind and the environment. I am happy in this religion and yes I call it a religion. What many People dont understand is the diffrent paths of Paganism. I consider myself to be Celt/Druid though I have friends who are Wicca, Shamanic also a few who lean towards Native American Customs. Look at Christmas its originaly a Pagan Festival same with Easter and a few more. Im not going to ever try to convert anyone to Paganism that is the individuals choice. One chooses their own Path. Please do not confuse Paganism with Satanism has Pagans we do not recognise a thing called the Devil.

Absolute tosh, what is this guy on??

Religion is the single biggest cause for fighting and disagreement in this world, and the 'church' is fighting a losing battle against the fact that less and less believe the tosh that they spurt out and the stories which they base their life on.
As the people before me have said he should keep his opinions to the people who turn up on a sunday morning, and not inflict them on the rest of us, much like what he is suggest JK Rowling should do with her Harry Potter books. Hypocrit????

Oh look, its that intolerant self-important bigot again... everybody wave!

still trying to promote your books then, Logan? nobody is interested, we wont buy them, you sad little man.

How the Lancashire Telegraph can allow this man page space is beyond me. he is a dinosaur and should be placed in a museum with other antiquated fossils to be looked at in amazement by children who will be amazed that such a thing ever had a use - a bit like a the 'stocks' or a 'torture rack'.

Next week maybe we can have Robert Mugabes views on Grange Hill?

Norman the Wangler, Baxenden says...
9:28am Thu 14 Aug 08

...and to quote Brok from Conglesbury - 'we should defend to the death his right to say it' i fully agree with that statement but will counter by asking is this selectively-tolerant 'christian' man a fit and proper voice to have spouting hatred and nastiness throughout our paper each week?

Joseph Yossarian, London says...

What's more disturbing?
JK Rowling's fiction encouraging thousands of children to read?
OR
Rev K teaching children as FACT that women are incapable of being bishops, and teaching as FACT that the earth is 6,000 years old and teaching as FACT that scientists are possessed by the devil, teaching as FACT that shopping on a sunday is contrary to god and teaching as FACT that a muslim should not be employed in a cathedral and teaching as FACT that Gordon Ramsey is the devils disciple ....(continue ad nauseam)

(rhetorical question)

This man is far more of a danger to childrens education than JK Rowling.

Ted Maul, Blackburn says...

Why do the LET give so much space to this intolerant bigot?

His is a particularly nasty branch of Christianity - based on good old Old Testament hate, ignorance fear and repression.

With him and that hypocritical self-serving old chav Margo the LET really seem to enjoy giving free publicity to morons.

Joseph Yossarian, London says...
6:20pm Thu 14 Aug 08

Oh, the power of t'internet. It allows us to research and expose bigotry.
The LET wouldn't publish a taliban comment but the rev gets away with comparing war veterans to neo-nazis, blatent homophobia, encouraging violence and rampant lies!

Here's a selection + an old review of his book....

On his book one Christian reviewer commented:
"The author's aim is to provide the basis for converting occultists to Christianity, but his lack of objectivity and of factual accuracy remove credibility from his attempt. "(Gilbert 1993, 177)

Rev Kev on War Veterans and Remberence:
Kev
“ME and my dog Lady Sunday strolled by a squad of black shirts and suits. Parading at the cenotaph, they sang and prayed to Jesus, dipped neo-nazi flags, and laid wreaths to all the whites who had died. “
JY
What! Those who died to protect our freedoms are neo-nazis? This man is an insult to all who have worn a uniform to serve.

Rev Kev on Punishment:
Kev
A nation needs honest justice for both offender and offended and that can only mean an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth'.
JY
Vengence killings all round! An eye for an eye and the world goes blind.....

Kev
“Yet this is nothing to letting a 10-year-old have his own way, his own freedom of expression, and complete immunity from being given a good hiding.”
JY
Yes, Capital Punishment is good for kids – bring back the birch!!!

Rev Kev on relationships:
Kev
“Without the full commitment of public marriage, sex is dishonest”
JY
Well that’s quite a lot of LET readers branded as liars.

Rev Kev the Homophobe
Kev
Is God homophobic? Or, is it that a loving Creator of men, women and sex is gently guiding us his way? Go forth and multiply! ran his delightful commandment. Difficult for an Adam and Steve.
JY
God would not be homophobic, but the Rev clearly is.
Kev
But this week we took a massive lurch away from yet another part of our faith heritage when the Lords backed gays, even as thousands of the Christians and Muslims protested outside Parliament for their reasonable beliefs.
JY
The Lords did not back gays, the Lords backed a society where all are equal.

Rev Kev on Darwin:
(evolution is..)“totally inadequate to explain where we have come from and how we got here”.
JY
On the contrary – it offers proven evidence. The BIBLE offers zero evidence, only superstition.
Kev
“Could these highly complex defence mechanisms have ever evolved from chance accidents over millions of years? Somehow, it seems far easier to believe in a kind, forward-looking Creator, an intelligent designer”
JY
Just because you think your story is easier to believe don’t make it right. The EVIDENCE against your story is irrefutable. Evolution as proven by genetics is believable.
Kev
“In the States, Canada, the Netherlands and even Russia, evolution and six-day creation are taught or discussed side by side, as well as the idea that evolution could have been the Creator's way of making everything”
JY
No, they are not. Complete pack of lies. Faith schools may teach this. It is NOT in all schools as the rev lies.
“The way evolution is taught, devoid of God and values, is totally inadequate to explain where we came from and how we got here''
JY
INCORRECT. Anyway god’s place is in RE lessons, not biology
Kev
“Mr Logan believes that this blunt survival-of-the-fitt
est idea is crippling our society by implicitly teaching students that jungle law is what counts in relationships, economics and other areas of life.”
JY
And here he shows his complete ignorance. In no way at all does natural selection implicitly teach children this. He is lying again. (breaking his precious commandment) This is absolutely categorically not taught in other classes, and certainly not in economics.
Kev
He explained: "I give each side a fair hearing. I present the evidence for and against evolution, for an old earth and a young earth, and then invite the reader to be judge and jury.
JY
Big fat FIB.
RK
If there's no Creator, then we're just chemical machines driven by selfish genes
JY
There is no such thing as a selfish gene, however good a book title it might be. People are selfish.
Kev
“"We teach our brightest and best that they've swung from the jungle and that survival of the fittest should rule.”
JY
No we do NOT teach this. We teach natural selection in nature and democracy and equality in society.

The same Rev Kev in the LET suggested we should all give 10% of our income for God’s work (thereby making his Church considerably more wealthy, no doubt)

Resurrecting the tithe - the tax on poverty that made the church so rich!

Let's have a decent columnist - not one who uses "religious freedom" to spout prejudice, intolerance and bigotry.

Joseph Yossarian, London says...

Yes that IS strange Nostradamous.

This evil-minded 'christian' bigot should be removed from this paper - (he can write in to the letters pages like us of course - he is entitled to promote his book all he wants - but to give him a column is ludicrous).

His views are offensive to say the least. He is a sick, twisted, publicity hungry, book promoting, 'holier-than-though' charlatan who is clearly using his 'god' to boost his bank balance. Now thats not very 'christian' is it.

Lets hope he crawls back under the grubby little stone from where he came.

(And no 'reverand' (like you are to be revered - what a joke) i'm not gay, or a demon, or an ex-soldier, or a witch or anything else). just a Lancastrian family man who is sick of religious morons imposing their juvenile beliefs on the more vulnerable members of the public.

what you do is basically mind-grooming of the weak. You should be ashamed, but i realise you are far too pompous for that.

Lets have it right, religion is tolerated in this land and you are free to practice it as long as it does not contravene the laws of the land. I.E you can believe what silly little books you want but there is a limit. dont take it to seriously!

There is as much truth in harry potter as there is in the bible, and anyone with half a brain knows that, and i expect you know it too. Plenty of money to be made when you are a 'pillar' of society serving a vulnerable flock eh?

Norman the Wangler, Baxenden says...

Come to think of it, i must have missed the bit in the bible where Jesus flogged merchandise to his followers on the way down from the mount...

'Get your Jesus tour t-shirts here... only £22, Jesus mugs eight quid, Jesus caps £10, Jesus CDs with brand new recordings of the sermon on the mount featuring his home-boys moses and bad-bwoi Judas are a snip at £10.... awright darlin... what can i do for ya? 2 caps, one mug and a t-shirt? that'll be fifty pahnd moi lav, noyce doin' bizniss wiv ya, Gawd bless ya!!!'

What a relief it is that people like Logan no longer hold sway in the community in the same way that they would have done in the fifties.
They would like nothing more than to be able to bully and brow beat everyone into living oppressive conveyor belt lives with natural human diversity stifled and repressed. Logan is a reminder that we should never return to those days.
