THE owner of well-known Blackburn business Byrom Supplies has spoken of her sadness after closing its doors.

The Chapel Street builder’s merchant, which Maralyn Rigby owned alongside her husband Paul, has been bought by the council to make way for a proposed £4million road.

If the road gets planning permission, the building will be demolished in September, and council bosses hailed the deal as an “important step” towards clearing the way for the dual carriageway.

Mrs Rigby, who had previously indicated she was unwilling to make way, said: “It’s the end of an era. I was crying all day.

“I was devastated to let the lads that worked there go.”

Other obstacles in the way of the road, which will link up with the £12million Wainwright Bridge, include a listed building and St Peter’s graveyard.
