PLANS for a bus lane linking Blackburn, Darwen and Accrington have been hit by a major blow after a council rejected the scheme.

Hyndburn Council said it had “disassociated” itself from the multi-million pound Pennine Reach scheme and called current consultations a “total sham”.

But Lancashire County and Blackburn with Darwen councils - which are jointly leading the scheme - said the project could go ahead without Hyndburn’s consent.

A “second draft” of the scheme was presented to business owners in Darwen on Wednesday which will salvage parking spaces and avoid some of the controversial road closures included in the original plans around the A666.

But Hyndburn Council leader Peter Britcliffe said the project would still be a huge inconvenience to residents.

He said: “Any advantage to be gained in bus timetables would be more than offset by inconvenience to residents wishing to park their cars, loss of trade to local businesses resulting in more shops closing and creating dangerous main roads with fast moving traffic.

“The consultation process to date has been a total sham and I can only hope that residents will not be ignored when Lancashire County Council makes the final decisions.”

But bosses at the county council said the current consultation was “wide-ranging” and residents’ concerns would be listened to.

County Council transport boss Coun Matthew Tomlinson said: “These proposals, if given the go-ahead, would bring a lot of outward investment into the area.

“Our research shows us that people are quite happy to use public transport but one issue is the speed that the buses can move between towns in the busy traffic.

“The consultation will be comprehensive and it is a shame if Hyndburn Council does not wish to air its views.”

Businesses in Darwen had previously been among the most vocal critics of the scheme so far and members of Darwen Rotary Club presented a 2,445-signature petition protesting against the bus lane to Blackburn with Darwen Council director of regeneration Adam Scott.

The original plans for the bus lane would have seen it run between Darwen and Blackburn on the A666 up to Whitebirk, before passing through Rishton, Great Harwood and Clayton-le-Moors and into Accrington.

It was to return to Blackburn in a loop along the Blackburn Road through Church and Oswaldtwistle.

A final decision on the scheme will be made by Blackburn with Darwen Council and Lancashire County Council.

Major blow to East Lancs bus lane scheme

LET are you now in the business of predicting the news.

The basic idea is fine, lets get from town to town quicker. Sound, no problem, lets get on with it!
except for the little problem where it will not work. Has anyone seen the 666 in Darwen during rush hour? that first morning rush lasts for about 2 hours allong the whole route and lasts all day in Darwen Town Centre. Looking at our past efforts to alter the 666 in Darwen we should forget the bus lane and fix what is broken first then see what the effect is on traffic.
If people want to get to Accrington quick or Burnley sort out the rail system or do like they do to Burry and have an express bus that uses the M66 as a speed link through to Manchester.
Its not realy that hard to stop and think of other options, all i had to do was look at what they did in the older days when it worked.

Despite Darreners' overwhelming rejection of the bus lane, we all suspect it will be forced upon us.If, however, it takes as long to do as the piddling little lane at the bottom of Hardman Way we will all be dead and buried by its completion.I would also like to nominate the traffic lights at the Blackburn end of this set up for an entry in the Guiness Book of records for the longest red light (unbroken) ever. Look out for it as you wait at the lights on Bolton Road !
Thank You,
Mike Adamson

Had to have a little chuckle to myself after reading the Anti Bus Lane graffiti written at the Pennine Reach public relations stall in Darwen Mkt. Hall. Check it out before it’s removed.

Great News!! At last someone has had some common sense and rejected this hairbrained scheme. The A666 could be helped by a dedicated rail link creating more stops between Darwen/Blackburn/Acc
rington.
Spend the money on a by-pass and reduce the town centre pollution at the same time.
Anyway, the road scheme is a non runner because no Councillor will risk the wrath of his constituants by voting for it!!

The bus lane is the single most hair brained scheme to reduce co2 emissions I have ever come across. Does this good for nothing government and it's acolytes really believe that denying the electorate the use of their own vehicles will win votes. Will the bus stop outside your place of work, and more to the point will it get you there on time after dropping the kids off at school ? Will it stop outside the supermarket ? Will you actually be allowed on the bus if you have a pram, a wheelchair or indeed more than two bags of shopping ? This is an absolutely ludicrous suggestion for the narrow main roads of mill towns. The money would be better spent re-nationalising public transport and creating a cheap, reliable alternative to the car.
