Royal walkabout Gt Harwood 1936
THESE days royal walkabouts are very much part of any visit by a member of the royal family but back in 1936 when this picture was taken it was very much a rarity.
In fact, this picture is believed to show the first official royal visit to Great Harwood.
The Duke of Kent is pictured walking down Queen Street which was lined by crowds of flag-waving schoolchildren.
He had visited the Men’s Occupation Centre in Town Hall Street where courses were being held to train the unemployed in crafts including carpentry and cobbling.
He was heading to the Mercer Hall where classes for jobless women workers were being held. The Duke was accompanied by council chairman, Mrs G M Boardman.
