A café which opened earlier this year in Feniscowles has achieved a five-star food hygiene rating in its first inspection, and staff are delighted.

Beechwood Coffee Bar in Livesey Branch Road opened at the beginning of March and had its first inspection last week.

The inspectors looked at the standard and quality of how food is handled, stored, prepared, the cleanliness of facilities and how food safety is managed.

The Feniscowles café received the highest possible rating from the Food Standards Agency with an impressive five-star food hygiene score as well as the Gold 'Recipe 4 Health' award.

The cafe owner, Suzie Bretherton, was pleased with the rating and thanked her staff for all their hard work and effort.

She said: “We’re delighted to receive the five stars because we’re always striving to keep up with the requirements and we’ve worked hard to get everything in place.

“The business has been going well and we’re happy with it and proud of ourselves.

"We are doing alright and we always try to keep improving the business to make it as best as we can.

“Blackburn with Darwen council were really impressed during the inspection and encouraged us to go for the gold award which is what we were awarded on Thursday (September 7).

"We’ve had a good response so far from customers as well so we’re all really happy.”

The menu is currently being updated with new items like protein shakes and smoothies, to encourage customers to opt for healthier options, which Suzie says will mean some menu items will reduce in price.

In addition to this, Suzie has also started organising live music nights with the first one coming up being a wine and cheese night on September 21 and 22.

There will also be an 80s event on October 14.
