A scheme to help prevent flooding in an East Lancashire town has been awarded £200,000.
The Earby Flood Alleviation Scheme Phase 3, in Earby Beck, has been allocated £200,000 from the government’s Frequently Flooded Allowance for 2023/24.
The government will be investing more than £26 million through this first tranche of funding to deliver advance projects in communities that experience repeated flooding and support investigative studies to bring forward new, as yet unidentified projects not currently on the floods capital programme.
This is a positive step forward for people in Pendle who have been negatively impacted by flooding in the past and shows a commitment to reduce flood risk in the future.
Pendle MP, Andrew Stephenson and Councillor Mike Goulthorp welcomed the news, with Mr Stephenson saying: “I was in Earby this week with Councillor Mike Goulthorp who talked me through the progress of the most recent flood alleviation work at New Cut.
“The works at New Cut, followed the £1 million Victoria Clough culvert repair project which was completed in 2019.
“Earby has suffered from significant flooding over recent years, most notably the Boxing Day 2015 floods.
“Therefore I am encouraged that the government has allocated more funding for the town.”
