THIS photo from the archive shows the stage area of one of East Lancashire’s most important venues in the post war years.

You are looking at part of the ballroom at Accrington Conservative Club which hosted major balls and dances virtually every Saturday night.

Hundreds of couples met at dances at ‘the Con’ which also hosted some of the leading big bands and orchestras over the years.

Look at the ornate ceiling. The Con Club also boasted a sprung dance floor.

Built at the height of the Edwardian era, the club on Cannon Street was one of the largest Conservative clubs in the country and the ballroom could play host to over 1,000 people.

Fire destroyed the building in 2016.
