A council is 'investigating the options' available to it in relation to a man who set up home underneath a motorway bridge.

Blackburn with Darwen Council say they are aware of the man's presence and have been 'looking into the issue' this week.

While it is not believed the man is actually breaking any laws, with many people calling for him to be left alone, the council has inferred that he may have been using 'loopholes' in current legislation to allow him to remain in situ under the M65, where he has parked a motorhome, a BMW, a hearse, and erected his own weights gym.

When the Lancashire Telegraph went to investigate the bizarre home set-up at the beginning of March, they found the site, under the M65 motorway bridge at Darwen services, included what appeared to be a rally call to Darreners in the shape of a huge sign reading 'Darwen Needs You'.

The man thought to be occupying the area was nowhere to be seen, but highways maintenance workers who were parked under the bridge at the time did confirm that he was living there.

One reader, known as Waltzing Matilda, said: "This made me smile.

"As long as he isn't breaking laws or being a nuisance to anyone else, where's the harm?

"It's dead space under a motorway bridge.

"We desperately need more nutters and eccentrics in the world and fewer fascists."

And Alyssa12 commented: "Fair play to him, at least he isn't having to pay council tax and other household bills.

"I might even join him, I'll save a fortune."

While it is not yet known whether the council will take enforcement action against the man, a spokesperson for Blackburn with Darwen Council said: “The Council is looking into this issue and is investigating the options available.”
