RUNNERS in their thousands raced through the streets of Burnley for the annual Pennine Lancashire 10k.

People put their best foot forward for the road race, which saw many raising money for various good causes.

The race was won by Chris Holdsworth, 24, from Burnley who was raising funds for Run for Nepal in the aftermath of the two devastating earthquakes.

A group of Premier League football referees also lined themselves up for the race.

Mike Riley, Phil Dowd, Anthony Taylor, Bobby Madley and Mike Jones swapped their whistles for trainers to take part in the Asda Foundation event, organised by Run For All, in Burnley.

The race is part of the Asda Foundation 10K series which is part of the lasting legacy of the late Jane Tomlinson CBE who raised almost £2 million for charity through a series of endurance challenges, despite being diagnosed with incurable cancer.

The route, which started near the town centre, passed Turf Moor, and took in three parks – Rowley, Towneley and Thompson.

Partner charities this year were Derian House Children’s Hospice, Macmillan Cancer Support, Pendleside Hospice, Shine and the Jane Tomlinson Appeal.

Winner Chris said: “The conditions were perfect .

“I wasn’t originally thinking that I would run today but I couldn’t resist it in the end .”

Spectator Sarah Johnson, 34, from Accrington, said: “It’s great to see so many people taking part again this year.

“They are raising so much money for charity.

“It’s getting bigger and bigger every year.”

Glenn Robinson, 23, from Burnley, said: “What I like is that everybody can get involved .

“It’s nice to have such a large free-to-watch sporting event in the town which raises money for so many good causes as well .”
