A leading trade unionist has hit out at Watford MP Mr Tristan Garel-Jones for heckling the mayor at the opening of the Watford Unemployed Centre on Saturday.

The MP shouted “Not true” when the mayor, Councillor Ted Amey, claimed the Manpower Services Commission, which funded the centre, was fighting a Government responsible for unemployment.

Trades Council secretary Mr Dennis McGrath said Mr Garel-Jones should have kept quiet.

“He should have remembered he was not in the House of Commons. We do not behave like that here and he should know this.”

But Mr Garel-Jones was unrepentant about his outburst this week. He said he was writing to Employment Secretary Mr Norman Tebbit pointing out the mayor’s comments.

“The mayor made a political statement and he should have known better.”
Mr McGrath said: “The mayor was quite right in what he said and it is ridiculous that we should have these comments from the MP.”
