Air services to the Highlands and Islands face major disruption next week after last-minute talks yesterday failed to avert an airport strike.

Workers at Inverness and nine other airports will stop work on Monday just as the region's tourist season peaks.

Unite, the union formed by the recent merger of the T&G and Amicus, said its workers will stage a 24-hour strike on Monday and on every Monday thereafter until its pay demands are met.

Managers of Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL), said Unite refused to accept a company offer to go to the conciliation and mediation body Acas.
