SANTIAGO: Chile's new president, Eduardo Frei, said yesterday that he
would respect the right of General Augusto Pinochet to remain head of
the army until 1997. However, he said at his first news conference since
his swearing-in that his administration would strive for truth and
justice regarding human rights abuses committed during 17 years of
military rule.
