Princes William and Harry will attend the funeral of their grandmother, Frances Shand Kydd, Clarence House said yesterday.

They will join mourners at the service in St Columba's Cathedral, Oban, next Thursday at 2pm.

Mrs Shand Kydd will later be buried at the Pennyfuir cemetery, two miles from the town and near to her home on the Isle of Seil.

The 68-year-old, who died at her home on Thursday morning, will be laid to rest in the remote community where she became a well-known figure.

Clarence House said yesterday that the princes were ''very upset'' by their grandmother's death.

William, who is on his summer break from university, was understood to be making contact with 19-year-old Harry, who is in Africa as part of his gap year.

Father William Maclean, a friend of Mrs Shand Kydd, yesterday dedicated mass to her at a packed St Columba's Cathedral.

He said: ''She wanted to be seen as one of us in Oban, I don't think she wanted any fanfare. She wanted us to treat her with respect and dignity and that is what I tried to do.

''Locals in the congregation will have known about her death and appreciated the fact the mass was for her.''
