A collision between junctions eight and seven on the M65 caused queuing traffic.

The adverse weather also caused Todmorden Road in Burnley to be closed in both directions because of the snow.

The closure was in place from Burnley Road to Bacup Old Road.

Sgt Andy Willis of Lancashire Police said: "Due to an incident on the M6 northbound near to Salmesbury earlier this morning there is significant traffic congestion on the M6 and M61 motorways.

"The situation has not been aided with inclement weather also affecting that area at the same time.

"As a result adjoining roads such as the A6 and M65 are also busier than usual.

"Please check online mapping or route planning services before you set off this morning to find the best route and allow extra time for your journey.

"The incident has been dealt and the motorway is fully open but the congestion will take some time to clear."
