FINAL measures have been put in place to demolish a derelict town centre bar, which was branded an “eyesore”.

Franky’s Bar, in Church Street, has been empty since it was set alight by arsonists in December 2012, falling into disrepair.

It was sold at auction to a Hong Kong-based businessman, Mr Pang, who was urged to take swift action on the site, formerly Darwen Central Conservative Club.

In late November council bosses urged the new owner of the property to state his intentions for the site, and, in December, the council confirmed that the decision was to flatten it.

Last week the council’s Building Control department issued a notice under Section 81 of the Building Act authorising the full demolition of the property.

Council bosses have said they are now speaking with contractors to confirm a start date for work.

On news of the demolition, Cllr Brian Taylor said: “I’m very pleased.

“Every time we have had bad weather and high winds I’ve been really concerned about safety.

“It will be great relief once it’s been demolished, and the road will be able to be opened to two-way traffic, which will be a good thing for the town centre.

“To have that eyesore there has not been good.”

And Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Rossendale and Darwen, Will Straw, said: “It is very good to hear that the derelict Franky’s Bar building will be demolished.

“Since the fire in 2012 this has been an eyesore in the centre of Darwen and it is a pity that it has taken so long to get to this stage but at least the end is in sight.”

“I hope now that plans will be taken forward quickly to erect a new building in keeping with the conservation area so that new tenants can make use of the fantastic location in the town centre.”

Blackburn with Darwen Council executive member for regeneration Cllr Maureen Bateson said: “The council is working with the owner of the former Franky’s Bar site as they begin the process to demolish the fire-damaged building, and we will look to help them progress this work as soon as possible.”

“This will ensure the site is made safe in the short term but with a view to considering new uses for the site in the medium term.”
