A TOUCH of ‘Downton’ has been created in Accrington as the Town Hall unveiled its £750,000 ballroom restoration.

The classic ballroom at Hyndburn’s civic centrepiece is marketing itself as a prestige venue for wedding receptions, proms and other events after the work.

The venue has already held its first two events even before its official launch - a private party and Accrington Pipe Band performance both took place just before Christmas.

And the ballroom will be further showcased in early March when a wedding fayre is set to take place there.

The council said that it intends the ballroom is suitable for a host of occasions, from wedding receptions and school prom evenings to family parties, wakes, christenings, dedications and live shows.

It has a capacity of 300, while 240 people can be accommodated for a sit-down meal.

A leading feature of the ballroom is the grand staircase that lends itself to red carpet entrances and a natural photography backdrop.

The ballroom dates back to 1858 the restoration was intended to enhance original features while bringing facilities up-to-date.

The ballroom features a fully sprung dance floor - the only other of its kind in the North West is at the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool. It has two new bars - one located behind the stage area and a mezzanine cocktail bar overlooking the main space.

Kerry Smith, cultural services Manager at Hyndburn Leisure, said: “The ballroom is the jewel in Accrington’s crown.

“It’s a spectacular setting for events and we’ve been keen to keep it as affordable as possible to hire so everyone in our town can make the most of it for their special occasions.”

Other vents lined up for the ballroom include dance nights, film clubs, princess parties and live shows - but Kerry said proms and weddings are set to form the majority of bookings at the venue.

Kerry added: “enquiries have been flooding in before we’ve officially launched, so 2015 is set to be an incredible year for the ballroom.

“From the moment brides, grooms, prom kings and queens step onto our majestic staircase they’ll feel like they’re in their very own Downton Abbey.”
