This is the third major achievement for the service this year, which is led by Mr Sriranga Kamath.

The others include the trauma and orthopaedics unit being named one of the top five in England in the outcomes collected from patient reported outcome measures data nationally following total joint replacements based on patient feedback both before and after their surgery.

The team based at the Royal Blackburn Hospital and led by consultant Vinod Shah was also placed in the top five of all 182 eligible trusts in England for fracture neck of femur (hip fracture) management.

The trust has met the standards for hip fracture management from admission including effective pain management, surgery on day of or after admission on a planned trauma list by senior staff, early supported discharge and falls assessment.

Makaram Srinivasan, clinical director for trauma and orthopaedics at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for all the teams who work so hard in both the emergency and planned aspect of orthopaedics and our patient feedback tells us that we are certainly getting our care and treatment right and improving outcomes for all the patients we see in the service.”
