A MAN drove off after his ex-partner jumped on the bonnet of his car to stop him when she believed he was under the influence of drugs.

Blackburn magistrates heard that Brian Lang, 28, accelerated away after Jackie Holt was thrown off the bonnet, banging her head on the ground.

And he later told her: “I thought I had killed you. You were so still.”

Lang, of Gloucester Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to assaulting Miss Holt and dangerous driving.

He was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison — suspended for a year — made subject to community supervision for 12 months, ordered to do 100 hours’ unpaid work and banned from driving for 12 months. He was ordered to take an extended retest.

Lang must pay £165 costs and £50 compensation and was made subject to a restraining order for 12 months.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said Lang was at his ex-partner’s home while she was out. Miss Allan said that when Miss Holt came home he had a “vacant” look in his eye.

“She believed he had taken drugs,” said Miss Allan.

“When he got into his car she jumped on to the bonnet to prevent him setting off. He ignored her, refused to give her the keys and set off.”

Miss Allan said Lang increased his speed — and when Miss Holt eventually fell off he raced away.

“She said she was carried for eight houses before she fell off,” said Miss Allan.

When he returned to Miss Holt’s house he said he thought he had killed her.

Miss Holt said: “You didn’t stop.”

He said: “I couldn’t, I was too scared. I’ll come back later and sort it out.”

She told him not to bother and asked for the keys he had to her house.

Lang, who was not represented, said he was sorry for what he had done.

“She just came running out and jumped on the car,” he said.

“I understand I shouldn’t have driven off but because of what has gone on over the last 12 months I didn’t want to be there.”
