VITAL medication is being stolen from the doorsteps of elderly people in Darwen.
Residents of Leven Grove have complained to their local pharmacy Geloo Brothers, about leaving prescriptions on doorsteps.
The company, based in Union Street, has told customers it will deliver all medication into people's hands from now on.
Residents claim the area has become rife with drug taking and say they suspect the drugs are being stolen by addicts.
One 58-year-old resident who did not want to be named for fear of reprisals from the thieves said: "I receive lots of medication for pain relief and diabetes.I think it is absolutely despicable that this is happening.
"I don't blame the pharmacy, I blame the thieves.
"The delivery man knocks on the door and leaves the stuff on the step.
"He may not be supposed to do that but its only a matter of minutes while we get to our doors. But these people are waiting for him to arrive to pounce."
Another elderly resident who lived nearby said: "We would like to have more police presence in the area.
"It is a disgrace that this is happening.
"We should not feel so unsafe in our own homes knowing there is someone watching our homes.
"There is drug dealing going on in the area too, which makes us uneasy going out after dark.
"A lot of us are disabled and in wheelchairs so we are vulnerable."
A police spokesman said: "Inquiries into the matter continue and I would urge anyone who has had medication stolen from their doorstep to contact police.
The pharmacy, confirmed the details of the situation, but declined to comment.
