A BT worker was left with serious head injuries when he was knocked down while on a job.

The man was putting a safety barrier around a manhole cover to carry out maintenance for Openreach in Darwen when the collision, involving a Peugeot 106, happened.

Police said he was in a stable condition last night.

The accident happened in Kay Street yesterday morning. Residents said they were shocked.

A 24-year-old said: “It was really bad. There was blood on the pavement and the paramedics had a defibrillator at the side of the road. The car involved looked messed up too.”

Police and paramedics were called shortly after 10am having being told that the worker, who is in his 40s, had been involved in a collision. When they arrived, the patient was unconscious and the car windscreen was shattered.

The road was closed to traffic and pedestrians. Witnesses said that after around 30 minutes, the BT worker regained consciousness and was sitting at the side of the road clearly in pain. He was taken to Royal Preston Hospital.

A police investigation has been launched and specialist officers were at the scene for several hours.

A builder who was working in Kay Street at the time of the collision said he drove down the road moments before the smash and saw BT men working.

The 42-year-old said: “I was only away for about five minutes and when I came back there were police and ambulances everywhere.

“The worker who was knocked down had a high-vis on. The car windscreen was smashed and the man was knocked unconscious.

“Within half an hour, he was sitting up so at least he came round.”

A Kay Street resident said: “I saw the guy lying at the side of the road. It was really serious. The police closed the road for quite a while.”

Another said an elderly man had been driving the car, with a female passenger.

Insp John Fryer said: “We were called to a collision in Kay Street at 10.08am yesterday. It involved one vehicle, which had collided with a pedestrian who is a man in his 40s. He was unconscious but breathing and he suffered serious head injuries.

“We closed the road and we had accident investigation on the scene for a while. The man who was run over is a BT worker. He was working in the street at the time.”

Police said no-one had been arrested.
