POLICE and Blackburn with Darwen Council are to run an anti-speeding campaign this Christmas in response to residents’ concerns.

Action will focus on the Knuzden Brook road that joins the Shadsworth estate to Hyndburn borough amid fears that fast-moving cars will cause a serious accident.

Shadsworth with Whitebirk Labour councillor Jim Shorrock has won a pledge of action to deter speeding motorists from borough highways boss Jim Smith and local police boss Abid Khan.

This will mean a highly visible police and council presence with mobile speed cameras and warning signs.

He is also stepping up his campaign for traffic calming measures on the road, the B6239.

Coun Shorrock said: “For the past couple of years, the road that connects the two boroughs of Blackburn with Darwen, and Hyndburn, at Knuzden Brook, has been causing increasing alarm due to the high speeds of vehicles using this stretch of road.

“Speeds of 50 or even 60mph are quite common.

“I feel it is only a matter of time before a serious incident takes place.

“The road is next to a children’s play area, at the lower part of the Shadsworth estate, and I requested traffic calming measures a couple of years ago, but was told this is not an ‘accident black-spot’.

“After a conversation with the police, we are to run a campaign on this stretch over the coming weeks leading up to the festive season, to ensure motorists observe the speed limit and drive diligently at all times.

“ Long-term, I will be looking for more permanent measures to be put in place.”

Shadsworth resident and community leader Alison Critchley said: “The issue around Knuzden Brook primarily stems from cars speeding.

“Add to this the playground, and before long there will be a serious incident involving a child.”

Blackburn with Darwen neighbourhood policing Inspector Khan said: “Reducing road casualties is a priority for Lancashire Police.”

Coun Smith confirmed the council would be involved in the anti-speeding campaign.
