A TOP young musician is set to return to her home town of Blackburn for a 50th anniversary season concert.

Sixteen-year-old Helena Rose, daughter of renowned local musician Peter Rose, will be performing with Blackburn Symphony Orchestra in Accrington on November 29.

The youngster, who is originally from Pleasington and now lives in Roy Bridge, Scotland, became the youngest person to win the Highland Young Musician award at just 13.

The talented violinist , who has been playing the instrument since the tender age of four, will be performing Bruch's violin concerto number one.

She has been performing violin duos with the BBC Concert Orchestra Associate Leader Charles Mutter and recently performed privately with Nicola Benedetti.

She is following in the footsteps of her father Peter Rose who is an award-winning writer best known for his environmental musicals for children.

Chairman of the orchestra, Sue Bradley, said: "We heard of Helena and her reputation as a violinist and contacted her to see if she could send some us a sample of her performing.

"She was fantastic so we asked her to perform for us."

Peter, 63, was head of music at St Augustine’s RC High School, Billington.

He massed choirs of over 200 children aged 11 to 16.

The concert is first of three taking place for the 50th anniversary season of Blackburn Symphony Orchestra.

It will be taking place at Accrington Town Hall at 7.30pm with Richard Howarth conducting.

It will also feature Wagner's prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde and Sibelius's symphony number one.

The highlight of the season is set to take place in July when world renowned pianist Martin Roscoe returns to Blackburn to perform with the orchestra.

Martin, who is a former member of the orchestra and was once their chairman, will be performing Beethoven's piano concerto number five.

He is one of the most regularly played pianists on BBC Radio 3 and has played with orchestra's across the world including the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, The Hallé and Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

Sue added: "We are all very excited about the 50th anniversary season. One of the highlights will be one of our former member Martin Roscoe coming back to perform at the 50th anniversary concert at Westholme school in July.

"Martin has become extremely well known throughout the world."

Tickets costing £10 are available from Accrington Town Hall, Blackburn Information Centre and Time and Tune, Blackburn.
