A MUSICAL extravaganza has been organised to raise funds for a charity set up in memory of tragic teen Lauren Johnson.

Family and friends of the 17-year-old set up Lauren’s Place with the aim of providing help to people with mental illnesses after she fell to her death from the Arndale Centre in Accrington in June.

A spokesman for the charity said: “The pupils of Lauren’s school, Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School, were so affected by the tragic death of Lauren that they have arranged a music evening to fundraise for Lauren’s Place.

“This has been arranged by the pupils with the help of the teachers and we have been amazed at the response with people wanting to participate.

“It will be a great night as the talent there is amazing.”

Sixth formers and the school’s jazz band will perform, while Ben Maguire and George Bury will present the concert, held in the main hall from 7.30pm until 10pm on Tuesday, November 4.

One of Lauren’s Place’s founders, Michael Pope, played alongside Lauren in her band, Laufeia, which played a specially-written song at her funeral.

The Burnley-born student’s death led to renewed calls for improved safety measures at the Arndale Centre, in Union Street, and a protest march through the town.

The centre’s owners closed the top decks of its car park following the tragedy, the fifth there in five years, while it carried out a safety review.

And Accrington and Rossendale College said it would teach pupils to recognise the signs of depression and other mental health issues after several recent suicides, including Lauren’s.
