A DAUGHTER left devast-ated by the death of her 48-year-old mum from leukaemia has organised a fundraiser in her memory.

Helen Mashiter, a bank worker from Wilpshire, had been in remission after being treated for acute myeloid leukaemia earlier this year, but doctors could do nothing when she relapsed last month.

Daughter Laura, a nurse at Royal Blackburn Hospital, said: “It was com-pletely out of the blue when she was diagnosed last year, but she had two rounds of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant that were successful, and she was in remission for six weeks.

“But it turned out to be so aggressive that she relapsed in August, and we were told she only had months to live.

“It was such a shock because we’d had all the good news – it was devastating for us.”

Helen, who worked at the Nat West bank branch in Darwen, died at the Royal Blackburn Hospital on September 13, and her funeral was held yesterday at St Peter’s Church in Salesbury. Laura, 24, who lives at in Sutherland Close with dad Ian, 47 and brother James, 21, added: “Mum was miraculous because all the time she was in hospital she never complained once. I’m a nurse and I’ve never seen anybody like that.

“She was completely self-less and everything she did was for us.”

The family are preparing to stage a fundraiser at the Wilpshire Hotel pub on Saturday, to raise cash for the Manchester-based cha-rity Caring for Adults with Leukaemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma.

The event will kick-off at 7pm, with live music and pub regulars taking part in a sponsored leg waxing and head shave.

There will also be a raffle, with a Blackburn Rovers shirt signed by Jordan Rhodes the main prize.
