THE red carpet was rolled out at Blackburn College to celebrate a record year of achievement at the 19th Further Education Awards.

Around 8,600 students from across East Lancashire completed their studies this year in a wide range of courses from art and design to science.

Those who worked extra hard and achieved top grades were recognised and applauded at the ceremony.

Principal and chief executive Dr Thomas Moore said credit should go to all the hardworking students, along with the dedicated staff at the college.

He said: “I would personally like to congratulate all our students and thank the staff here for their dedication, commitment and professionalism in helping our students realise their full potential.”

Among those to scoop an award was mum-of-five Yvonne Latham, 31, from Burnley.

With children aged five to 13, Yvonne juggled work, study and family life to achieve her Level Three Diploma in Plumbing and Heating.

She received two awards, the Centre Apprentice Award and the Governor’s Award.

Yvonne, who now works with her partner Derek in his plumbing company, said: “It is great that women are doing more traditional male-dominated jobs, and proving we’re just as good as they are.”

The college also recognised students who came through their studies despite challenging circumstances.

Maarya Islam, 19, from Great Harwood, received the achievement in the face of challenging circumstances award for completing her BTEC Level Three Extended Diploma in Applied Science, despite suffering from spina bifada which seriously affects her mobility.

She said: “I am really excited about studying biology and chemistry at Manchester University and realising my dream of becoming a science teacher.”
