A WOMAN has spoken off her horror at seeing a fellow commuter hit by a train.

The woman had been waiting for a Blackburn train heading for Manchester, at Entwistle train station when a man in his 30s had his legs struck by the train.

It is believed the man had been sat on the platform with his legs dangling and was moving his legs out of the way when he was hit.

He suffered severe injuries to his lower legs, police said.

The witness was one of the first people to run to the man’s aid.

She said: “I heard the train signal really loudly and then heard him scream.

“I called to him, rang an ambulance, grabbed a blanket and went to him.

“I basically had to put pressure on the wound — both his feet were very badly damaged.

“He was in a lot of pain and screaming.

“The train stopped a mile down the track and the guards ran back. The woman driver thought she had killed him, she was distraught.”

It is understood the man had been in the Strawbury Duck pub in Overshores Road shortly before the accident. Police said the man, who was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital, is still in a stable condition.

A neighbour living near the station rushed out to help the man.

Northern Rail suspended all services between Bolton and Blackburn for three hours while emergency services attended.

BTP are urging anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.

A spokesman said: “We’ve established that the man wasn’t on the tracks at the time of the collision but inquiries are continuing as what exactly happened.

“We are continuing to speak to witnesses to establish what happened and have reported the matter to the Royal Accident Investigation Branch.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police on 101.
